Neil Weir died in 1967, but it was not until 2009 that his grandson, Mike Burns, discovered his diary among some boxes he had been left, and learnt that his grandfather had served as an officer in the 10th Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlander throughout the First World War, seeing action at Loos, the Somme and Vimy Ridge, as well as in staff and training posts. It ends with his work at the War Office during the Russian Civil War of 191920. In the diary, and the accompanying letters which have been collected from various members of the Weir family, we hear the authentic voice of a First World War soldier and get an insight into his experiences on the Western Front and elsewhere. Edited and with introductory text by Saul David, this book is one of the most fascinating accounts ever published of the First World War as experienced by the men who fought it.

Poetry. Beth Gylys is a poet that people will remember and BODIES THAT HUM is going to be an auspicious debut collection. Her subject is an ordinary one, love and its discontents, but her music is extraordinary with the toughness of Carolyn Kizer and Dorothy Parker mixed into a loneliness that feels -- it sounds very different! -- like Emily Dickinson. Hers is an improvisatory, jazzy art that takes villanelles and sestinas back to the public urgency -- Dave Smith. BODIES THAT HUM is the winner of the 1997 Gerald Cable Book Award.

The last decade of study of the shallow-marine boundary layer has arrived at a synthesis of sediment dynamic principles that can begin to be transferred from the time scales of the rock record (years to millenia). At the same time, the technology of petroleum exploration has lead to a fundamentally new way of examining the deposits of sedimentary basins. This book applies these insights to continental shelf and continental margin deposits, providing an entirely new viewpoint to the subject.

Bog Bodies presents the results of the research carried out into this extraordinary phenomenon since the publication of the monograph Lindow Man in 1986. Over the last few years some key questions have been answered and new avenues of research opened up. Twenty-seven contributors from four countries bring a wide range of scientific and historical expertise to this survey. Apart from the finds from Lindow Moss, numerous bog bodies have been rediscovered or re-examined in Ireland and the Netherlands, all of which have now been systematically studied using modern scientific techniques. Bog bodies recorded in Britain and Ireland and a review of recent work into bog bodies found on the continent, highlighting a research project in the Netherlands, are surveyed as a whole. The reasons behind the deposition of bodies in bogs, their social context, and their place in the mythological as well as historical record of northern Europe are discussed in detail.
