Gwen Petersen earlier enlightened us on the joys of shoveling manure. Now, in this delightful new collection of pithy and hilarious essays, she explains how her philosophy of life comes with a good dose of horse sense. Here’s advice on how to fall off a horse with style, dressing to avoid embarrassing your equine friend, 1,001 uses for bag balm, perfecting the care and feeding of veterinarians and farriers, cattle drives and brandings, and falling in love all over again (with a horse, that is). Petersen’s words are as amusing as they are instructive, and whether you’re a horse lover or simply someone in need of a down-to-earth laugh, this is a book you won’t want to miss.

"God Bless My Horse", the title poem of my book, is a poem that tells how God has blessed this man's horse and by blessing his horse, has blessed the man's entire life, and all the stupid, crazy things he (and I) have ever done. While reading this book, you will see that, not only this poem, but the whole book actually tells the stories from the view of a young man during his developing spiritual journey through life, to an older man, who thrives on his relationship with GOD. Throughout it all, God has always been there! In this book, a lifetime of thoughts, humor, and emotions are written in poetry, with a distinct West Texas flavor, including the unique dialog and colloquialisms of the people of the area. Many of the poems are of the old west, telling tales of cowboys, Native Americans, and horses. Others talk about my working experiences as a lineman and with the oilfields. All the poems are stories of my life experiences and how I talked to God throughout these experiences. Throughout the book is the expression of my strong Christian faith and love for the one true God. It is my expressed wish that anyone who reads this book will not only enjoy the book, but that they will also receive the good news of God's love and grace provided by his son, Jesus.

The Little Sea Horse

THE LITTLE SEA HORSE is a heartwarming adventure brought to life by the author, Clara Stuart. It is a story of people touching the lives of their neighbors, with the help of a tiny creature who was discovered by mere chance. If the Lewis's hadn't gone fishing that morning, if they hadn't decided at the last minute to take one last vacation before winter came, this little wonder would have died, never to share his special gift with the world. Although the story is completely fictional, the author "dots" the story with similarities from her personal experiences, as well as the sweet spices of inspiration sprinkled throughout the book.. A few years ago, she and her husband had gone fishing on the Snake River in Northeastern Oregon. It was a cold, damp and foggy morning, but that didn't keep them from enjoying the scenery that they loved so much. They shoved their boat away from the dock and headed down the Snake River toward their favorite fishing spot. Just as they rounded the bend, something in the water caught Clara's eye. "I wonder what that is?" she asked her husband. It was just a Styrofoam bait box someone had carelessly tossed overboard. He didn't pay much attention to it, but Clara, well with the imagination that she has, it sent her mind whirling and creating. By the time they got home she already had the first two chapters planned, and a story was born. . . Al and Ellen Lewis were on vacation, enjoying a little fishing at their favorite place on earth. It was the beginning of autumn, and the days were dreary and cold. They were motoring out on the Snake River taking in the gorgeous view, on their way to their lucky fishing spot. The snow capped mountains stood tall behind the brown rolling hills in Northeastern Oregon. The River was cold and murky and fog ways laying low along the banks. All at once Ellen's eyes were drawn to a snag in the water, seemingly caught up in the currant. The water was churning, or was it. . . ? Coaxing her husband to get closer to the thing that was thrashing and fighting for its life, they only frightened it more. It freed itself but at the same time plunged into the frigid water and went under. As soon as it popped to the surface, Ellen grabbed it and pulled it into the boat. As the drama unfolds, it takes the Lewis's on an adventure of heartbreak, compassion, and love. The special little Sea Horse that they pulled out of the water, although tiny and helpless, turned out to be the very burst of inspiration that this small community needed. People who had neglected to stay in tune with their neighbors, came together in the time of need, taking the Lewis's "full circle" and beyond.

Meadowlark approached Scott after he had dismounted. “You’re riding my pony,” she declared in a threatening voice and stood with a hostile hands-on-hips posture face-to-face directly in front of him. He was startled! How to respond to this angry girl? “Gosh! I wouldn’t have ridden the pony if l knew you’d be upset. Your brother, Swallow, said it would be okay.” “Well it’s not,” she retorted angrily. “No one rides my pony without asking and me saying so.”

If you broke your horse to saddle and rode it for the first time yesterday, this book (chapter 1) is where you'd start tomorrow. If you have an older horse and you've taught him everything you know and he still don't know nothin', this book is where you'd start, (chapter 2). It's a roadmap to building the foundation every horse needs, regardless of age, breed or background, regardless of what you've got ultimately planned for that horse. Afterwards, when your horse knows this book back to front, go train for barrels, roping, eventing, jumping or dressage. But today, basics are basics. Section I is the stuff your horse needs to know. Section II is the stuff (the theory) you need to know. Practice the first handful of chapters in order, as written. Beyond that, you should feel free to mix and match depending on your needs or abilities. Some chapters are dependent upon others - but in those cases, I've spelled out necessary prerequisites. Question: "I just bought a horse. What do I do now?" Answer: "Buy my book, 'What I'd Teach Your Horse.'" Contents: SECTION I, BASICALLY TRAINING YOUR HORSE - Legs Mean Move (Step 1 if This Is "Day 2" for Your Young Horse) - Hip Control, Part I - Hip Control, Part II - Classic Serpentine - Train Your Horse to Travel Straight - Clockwork: How to Teach Anything to Your Horse - Shoulder Control - The Reverse Arc Circle - How to Fix Leaning Shoulders - Serpentine: Indirect to Direct - Speed Control - Slow Down, Part I: Move the Hip - Slow Down, Part II: Wherein We Train the Brain - Balky Horses: Comatose One Minute, Hot to Trot the Next - Crossing Creeks and Scary Stuff - Teach Your Horse to Lower Its Head While Standing - Better Back Ups - Simple Steps to Power Steering - Diagonal Movement ("Leg Yields Without the Legs") - Softening - Getting Leads - A Fix for Cross-Firing (aka "Cross-Cantering") - Hips, Get Behind the Shoulders (And Stay Put) - Hips-in (aka "Haunches-in" or "Travers") - Neck Reining How-To SECTION II, TEACHING YOU, THE THEORY BEHIND THE PRACTICE - The First Thing I Do - Each Time You Mount Up, Do This - How to Pick Up Your Reins Like a Pro - Training Magic: Release on the Thought - What You're Feeling For - Reins Tell Direction, Legs Tell Speed - Talking Horse - See Yourself Leading When Riding - Perfect the First Time - Six Easy Ways to Improve Your Training - Rider Checklists - Diagnosing Problems Books by This Author Meet the Author: Keith Hosman "If I had a dollar for every email I get asking "what to do" to make a riding horse out of the mare Uncle Emo just traded for the old RV—or how to retrain a horse that's grown rusty—or some version on either theme, I'd be the world's first gazillionaire. With the publication of this book then, I'm hoping to grab that distinction."

There is a well known saying that "when the student is ready, the teacher will appear" (Buddhist Proverb) - well, my teachers have appeared in the form of horses and continue to do so. Anyone who has spent any length of time around horses cannot have failed to have observed some of the profound lessons they are able to teach us. The question however, is whether we have actually learnt from them! Inside the covers of this book, you will find some of those lessons that I am now sharing with you so that their legacy can grow and 'ripple' outwards. There have been so many lessons but these are some of the most important. They are presented through pictures, thoughts and observations, including those given to me by our horses and ponies and also through some of the journal and blog entries I have made to illustrate the lesson. They are not in any particular order and can be read as a kind of 'journey' as we have experienced them or as individual gifts of motivation and learning; whichever suits you.
