New back in stock by popular demand, an invaluable guide to the work of one of the world's leading architects. Long before terms such as "green" and "sustainability" became fashionable, Norman Foster was designing buildings that were environmentally sensitive and highly adaptable. Today this Pritzker Prize-winning architect is famous for such monumental structures as Hong Kong's new international airport, the rebuilding of the Reichstag in Berlin, and the Great Court at the British Museum in London. This survey of more than forty years of work demonstrates how, over a period of tremendous social and technological transformation, foster and Partners continue to adhere to the themes and concerns that have always shaped their work. Richly illustrated with photographs and drawings, and featuring text by Norman Foster, this catalogue explores all aspects of the practice's achievements as urban planners, architects, and industrial designers. In addition to airports, railway stations, bridges, museums, universities, offices and private houses, the book includes designs of telecommunications and energy infrastructures, street furniture and smaller household items. Together these works form a complex of intelligent, thoughtful, and visionary work by an ever-changing, yet consistently brilliant design team.

Amongst many other buildings, Norman Foster is responsible for the design of Beijing's new airport, one of the world's largest, for the Rossiya tower in Moscow, in contention to be the tallest skyscraper in Europe until the credit crunch killed it, for one of the towers at Ground Zero in Manhattan, and for a crop of new towers in London. He designed the Reichstag, the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banks headquarters in London and China, the new Wembley stadium and the British Museum's new court. Deyan Sudjic's insightful and elegantly written biography charts the remarkable life of one of the world's most influential architectural figures.

Compiled by Norman Foster, Reflections is a personal statement about architecture, how we understand how it is perceived. Organised thematically, in a series of visual 'chapters', it collates and contrasts black-and-white photographic images from four decades of Foster's practice to create a visual narrative. For Foster, the book reflects his belief that architecture is essentially a social art - a necessity and not a luxury - that it is generated by people's needs, which are both spiritual and material. It has much to do with optimism, joy and reassurance - of order in a disordered world; of privacy in the midst of many; of space in a crowded site; of light on a dull day. it is about quality: the quality of a space and the poetry of the light that models it. This book attempts to explore some of these themes and ideas in an abstract way and, in doing so, to trace connections through Foster's extensive oeuvre. Some of the images will be familiar, some unexpected. Together they provide a source for reflection.

"The nature of colour should change -no longer just a thin layer of change, but something that genuinely alters perception" -this stipulation of Rem Koolhaas is echoes by the world famous architects and designers Alessandro Mendini and Norman Foster. In this volume, they present between them a total of 90 colours -each covering half a page -accompanied by comments on the background, the significance and the applications of the colours. Studies of colours from each office form the basis of this book, and were previously only available in extravagant individual editions. With this comprehensive and consistent presentation of the varying approaches to colour, we have a compendium which shows the wide use of colour in today's technologically advanced architecture with its modern, post-modern and deconstructive orientation. The range of examples of the colours in practice includes load-bearing structures, facades, interior design, furnishing and the entire specturm of product design.

Founded in 1870, Boston's Museum of Fine Arts is not just an impressive museum--it is also housed in one of America's most distinguished buildings. When it was time to add an extension to accommodate the museum's holdings, Foster + Partners conceived of a brilliant strategy, one that reinforced the logic of the original Beaux-Arts footprint while adding a few neo-modernist twists such as the insertion of a freestanding glazed structure between the building's two principal spaces. This "crystal spine" encloses an existing courtyard in a glass "jewel box," which creates spaces for visitor orientation and a cafe and leads to the new Art of the Americas wing. This book provides a detailed history of the 120,000-square-foot project, from the museum's founding to the triumphant unveiling of the new wing."
