Society tells us we have the power and where-with-all to make it on our own. The Passionate Journey runs counter to these voices of self-sufficiency with a thoughtful collection of 47 Lenten devotions leading up to the most sacred time of the year--Easter. Through guided reflection, Scripture reading, journaling, silence, and prayer, we are drawn into the peace that is generated by solitude, and prompted to reorganize our priorities, slow down, and appreciate the ultimate sacrifice made by Christ on our behalf. These well-crafted devotional readings are divided into four 10-day sections with a special portion for Holy Week, especially designed to help readers attend to Jesus's sacrifice, and apply the message of the Passion to their life. Additional helps are included in the appendix to help adapt the readings for small-group or family devotions. Even Christians whose faith traditions don't ordinarily include Lenten devotions will find these reflections a welcome retreat and will help connect their lives to Jesus's sacrificial story.

""Look at these powerful black-and-white figures, their features etched in light and shadow . . . Has not this passionate journey had an incomparably deeper and purer impact on you than you have ever felt before?"" -- Thomas Mann Belgian-born Frans Masereel (1889-1972) was one of the greatest woodcut artists of the twentieth century. Ingeniously portraying the human experience through dramatic art, this novel-without-words--crafted from 167 intricate woodcuts--is considered to be the Flemish artist's masterpiece. A feast for the eyes and the imagination, this powerful visual narrative details the life of an ordinary man. From the first bustling frame to the last haunting image, we are deeply drawn into the hero's day-to-day encounters, and discover a spirit in quest--one that we can profoundly relate to, emotionally and intellectually. Through each extraordinarily vivid depiction, readers feel the hero's happiness, grief, awe, and despair.

A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE illustrates the choices one makes in life and how the gift of energy is at everyone’s disposal to create whatever is desired. Kathy Brown shares how she came to understand the use of energy through her intensely personal stories of disappointment, tragedy, and triumphs—all a part of life—on the road to fulfillment, happiness, and love. If one does not consciously direct this gift of energy, one is creating its experiences unconsciously and may not be receiving the desired results. However, in the moments when the intellectual, psychological, physical, and spiritual all come into balance, there is a feeling of great harmony and joy. One might call them moments of enlightenment—a reality worth living.

Growing up as an outdoorsy, nature-loving child in Portland, Oregon, Robert Mann wanted to be a forest ranger, but it was violin lessonsâand his parents' encouragementâthat ultimately launched him on a remarkable journey that would span a lifetime and five continents as he pursued his passion for classical music as a violinist, composer, conductor, and teacher. In this fascinating and far-ranging memoir, he looks back at the struggles and triumphs of that journey, as well as the unique insights and experiences he's gained along the way. From their beginnings in 1947, the Juilliard String Quartet set out to play new music as if it had been composed long ago, and to play a classical piece as if it had just been written. At first, the fledging combo struggled to compete with the more established European string quartets, while also coping with the inevitable difficulties of trying to blend four singular personalities and talents into a harmonious whole, but by the time Mann retired from the group some fifty-one years later, the Julliard String Quartet had played close to six thousand concerts on every continent except Africa and Antarctica and become an enduring, beloved institution in American music. They won three Grammys for their recordings, while sharing their distinctive sound with such notable figures as Glenn Gould, Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, and even Albert Einstein. A Passionate Journey is a collection of both spoken and written words in the form of essays, letters, lectures, and transcribed interviews from various times in his life. Together they offer an engrossing glimpse into a life filled with musical milestones and into the fascinating mind of a musical giant.

Believing that the benefit outweighs the risk, Dick Dressler, a financial planner and insurance specialist, arrives at the doorstep of a drug dealer. Though it's unusual for such a respectable looking fellow to have any reason to be there, looks can be deceiving. Dick is on a mission. With the same matter-of-factness he would display in presenting a pension plan to a client, he will clean up one of the many messes in his life-this one caused by the eldest of his three sons. The caretaker of his family, Dick manages one crisis after the other, one day at a time. As his youngest son struggles with Cystic Fibrosis and the other two battle drug addictions and personal demons, a series of bizarre and tragic events unfold, evoking intense emotions and challenges. Through each ordeal that arises from circumstances and choices, Dick reveals an incredible capacity to focus on anything good and positive he can find or create along the way. Incredibly, he and his wife Judy manage to stay together, keeping their family intact during the toughest times. Never accepting defeat, Dick maintains his passion for life while making the most of each day. His decisions will be controversial to some readers, but Dick makes no excuses. Instead, he aims to inspire compassion among those who stand by in judgment and to spark hope in those who are struggling through hardships. With an unusual capacity to nurture and love unconditionally, Dick shares his life to show that problems exist in all families, so rather than suffering in silence, he encourages loved ones to seek insights and support from others who understand.

Lewis Hine (1874-1940) was a sociologist, as his preference for themes related to immigrants and the working class in his photographs would clearly suggest. Having studied in Chicago and New York, he became a teacher of geography at the private Ethical Culture School in New York in 1901. An assignment to teach photography as well led him to that medium in 1903. In 1908 Hinbe gave up teaching and became a professional photographer. This volume presents a selection of photographs chosen from among nearly 11,000 negatives, a cross-section of Hine's creative work. It celebrates one of the truly great pioneers of documentary photography, an artist who left his mark in subsequent generations of photographers in this genre. Lewis Hine's influence upon the great documentary photographers of our time is undeniable.
