Based on his extensive experience as coach and mentor to many thousands of Christian leaders across a broad spectrum of ministry settings, Reggie McNeal helps spiritual leaders understand that they will self-select into or out of greatness. In this important book, McNeal shows how great spiritual leaders are committed consciously and intentionally to seven spiritual disciplines, habits of heart and mind that shape both their character and competence: The discipline of self-awareness—the single most important body of information a leader possesses The discipline of self-management—handling difficult emotions, expectations, temptations, mental vibrancy, and physical well-being The discipline of self-development—a life-long commitment to learning and growing and building on one's strengths The discipline of mission—enjoying the permissions of maintaining the sense of God's purpose for your life and leadership The discipline of decision-making—knowing the elements of good decisions and learning from failure The discipline of belonging—the determination to nurture relationships and to live in community with others, including family, followers, mentors, and friends The discipline of aloneness—the intentional practice of soul-making solitude and contemplation

Moving Ecclesial Leaders Toward Self differentiation

British Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery wrote, "Leadership is the capacity and will to rally men and women to a common purpose and the character which inspires confidence" (Sanders 19). Leadership matters. Healthy leadership matters. Biblically correct leadership matters. There are many models of leading, and each of them has the potential to be effective. Rosalyn Carter once said that "A leader takes people where they want to go. A great leader takes people where they don't necessarily want to go, but ought to be." Both in the larger church and in the local congregation, there appears to be a lack of self-ditferentiated leaders. If more leaders were spiritually and emotionally healthy, then the church would be better equipped to fulfill the call to spread the Gospel. Also, the people who fill the positions of leadership would complete to a greater degree their own call to be self-differentiated leaders. Peter Steinke says that "self-differentiation is the ability to stand up and be counted in matters of principle and belief" (Class Notes). The purpose of this project is to discover if the use of family systems theory and Reggie McNeal's Practicing Greatness will assist in moving ecclesialleaders toward selfdifferentiation. Another reason for this project was that the succession of leadership in the local church can be inconsistent. Churches tend to appoint leaders simply based upon their willingness to serve. There is little thought given to natural giftedness or spiritual depth. This project is an attempt to create a model ofmoving leaders in the church toward selfdifferentiation. Only when church leaders can be healthy both emotionally and spiritually can effective ministry be accomplished. The leaders of a system affect the entire system, so it is critical for them to be healthy. Dr. Peter Steinke's teachings on family systems theory were the foundation for this project. Reggie McNeal's book Practicing Greatness was used to bring more of a spiritual dynamic. McNeal's principles of spiritual greatness are systems theory by nature and go hand in hand with Steinke's teachings. The design of this project was to recruit emerging and present leaders within the congregation of the First Presbyterian Church of Athens. The participants were given a copy ofMcNeal's Practicing Greatness to read. The project was kicked off with a weekend retreat led by Dr. David Jones. Dr. Jones taught the group the basic principles of family systems theory. The project participants received handouts, watched videos, had group discussion, and learned the basics of family systems theory. The group then met six times for two to three hours each time and the project leader led them through discussions based upon McNeal's book. Group members, as part of the process, also shared their life stories regarding family of origin. After a five month soak time, the group was brought back together for a time ofreview and one final exercise. A controversial topic was introduced in order to test whether the participants were able to apply some ofthe principles of self-differentiation. The session was videotaped. Observations were made from the tape and they were used to measure the effectiveness of the project. "We do not know how many leaders opt out of greatness. But, we are grateful for everyone who chooses it. Because each time a leader chooses greatness, the world is better for it" (McNeall62). It is believed that this project made a significant impact into the lives of the participants and they chose greatness. They chose to become better in who they are not only as individuals but as leaders in the church.

Daniel Gutierrez, the world's #1 Latino motivator, shares the story of how he personally stepped into greatness. But everyone has a story, and Gutierrez shows how it's not our story but what we choose to do with it that determines our personal and professional success. Instead of offering blueprints or how-to plans, Dan encourages readers to cultivate their own strengths, map their own plans for success, live their own dreams, discover their true passion, be unafraid to challenge their beliefs, and know when to say yes to their own greatness and no to the attitudes, mishaps and tragedies that hold us back and keep us from stepping into our greatest potential.

Reggie McNeal's bestseller The Present Future is the definitive work on the "missional movement," i.e., the widespread movement among Protestant churches to be less inwardly focused and more oriented toward the culture and community around them. In that book he asked the tough questions that churches needed to entertain to begin to think about who they are and what they are doing; in Missional Renaissance, he shows them the three significant shifts in their thinking and behavior that they need to make that will allow leaders to chart a course toward being missional: (1) from an internal to an external focus, ending the church as exclusive social club model; (2) from running programs and ministries to developing people as its core activity; and (3) from professional leadership to leadership that is shared by everyone in the community. With in-depth discussions of the "what" and the "how" of transitioning to being a missional church, readers will be equipped to move into what McNeal sees as the most viable future for Christianity. For all those thousands of churches who are asking about what to do next after reading The Present Future, Missional Renaissance will provide the answer.

How do people in Japan conceive of life after death? Although many Japanese today claim that on their archipelago there has never been much interest in this topic, the evidence presented here shows otherwise. Documenting a rich range of historical as well as contemporary scenarios that present life as going on after death, these essays also show individuals and whole communities acting on the belief that the line between the living and the dead is porous and that it makes sense even now to practice the "life" one will have after becoming dead. They thus not only bring forward aspects of Japan obscured until now, but also can contribute to our own current discussions of life, dying, and death.

In this provocative book, author, consultant, and church leadership developer Reggie McNeal debunks these and other old assumptions and provides an overall strategy to help church leaders move forward in an entirely different and much more effective way. In The Present Future, McNeal identifies the six most important realities that church leaders must address including: recapturing the spirit of Christianity and replacing "church growth" with a wider vision of kingdom growth; developing disciples instead of church members; fostering the rise of a new apostolic leadership; focusing on spiritual formation rather than church programs; and shifting from prediction and planning to preparation for the challenges of an uncertain world. McNeal contends that by changing the questions church leaders ask themselves about their congregations and their plans, they can frame the core issues and approach the future with new eyes, new purpose, and new ideas. Also available: The Present Future DVD Collection (978-0-7879-8673-5), Reggie McNeal's DVD presentation of the ideas and insights featured in his best-selling book.
