Private provision of Technical and Vocational Further Education and Training (TVET) in the Further Education and Training (FET) band in the South African education system is an issue of national importance. To date however, information about the precise nature of this sector has been, at best, speculative. This study sets about constructing a comprehensive picture of the private post-school TVET sector. It provides, for the first time, empirical data about the participants, the location and ownership of institutions, the programmes offered, and the delivery of private TVET provision in the country. This is supplemented by a qualitative analysis using select case studies to explore the character of the sector. Results suggest a vibrant sector underpinned by differentiation in provision types with significant overlap in the way in which providers are managed and programmes delivered. Private Further Education and Training in South Africa provides the most up-to-date data and analysis of the sector. As the subtitle "The changing landscape" suggests, the study was undertaken in the midsts of considerable policy development in South Africa and is likely to provide an important source for understanding the sector.

South Africa has made huge gains in ensuring universal enrolment for children at school, and in restructuring and recapitalising the FET college sector. However, some three million young people are not in education, employment or training and the country faces serious challenges in providing its youth with the pathways and support they need to transition successfully into a differentiated system of post-school education and training. Across nine evidence-based chapters, 17 authors offer a succinct overview of the different facets of post-school provision in South Africa. These include an analysis of the impact of the national qualifications system on occupational training, the impact of youth unemployment, the capacity of the post-school system to absorb larger numbers of young people, the relationship between universities and FET colleges, the need for more strategic public and private investment in skills development, and a youth perspective on education and training policy. The authors have a number of recommendations for improving the alignment between schooling, further education and training, and university education - interventions that could shape the future of our youth.

Private Higher Education and the Labor Market in China focuses on Chinese private higher education institutions and investigates their institutional management efforts in linking private higher education to the labor market. The dissertation firstly describes and analyzes how these mostly demand-absorbing institutions include elements aimed at meeting labor market demands in their mission statements, and how they improve student employability and bridge graduates and employers through job-oriented fields of study provision, educational delivery, career services, as well as networking and partnerships. It then examines graduate surveys on initial employment outcomes about employment status, starting salary, job and education match, and job satisfaction, while exploring the associations of these outcomes with managed institutional efforts. Finally, it builds a conceptual model with two dimensions that illustrates institutional variations in management efforts and initial graduate employment outcomes. This dissertation concludes that many of the demand-absorbing Chinese private higher education institutions have managed serious efforts in linking private higher education to the labor market and some of them are even semi-elite in their job-oriented institutional efforts and initial employment outcomes.

This book contains eight papers from a detailed study of technical college provision in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, that raised the following four issues relevant to the transformation of technical colleges across South Africa: (1) the teaching and learning environment at technical colleges is suboptimal; (2) social relations at the technical colleges are tense, with few institutions having successfully come to terms with the rapid deracialization of student enrollments in recent years; (3) the labor market surrounding technical colleges appears totally dysfunctional, with few students obtaining employment after technical college training; and (4) the separate development policies of the past necessitate institutional restructuring. The following papers are included: "A Study of Technical Colleges in KwaZulu-Natal: A Methodological Introduction" (Andre Kraak, Graham Hall); "Problems Facing Further Education and Training" (Andre Kraak); "Planning Imperative: New Policy Framework in FET [Further Education and Training]" (Andre Kraak); "Socio-Economic and Educational Profile of KwaZulu-Natal" (Nisaar Mahomed); "Quantitative Overview of the Technical Colleges of KwaZulu-Natal" (Graham Hall); "Learning, Teaching and Management Environment: Evidence from Qualitative Studies" (Andre Kraak); "Autonomy and Responsiveness: Evidence from the Qualitative Case Studies" (Andre Kraak); and "Critical Overview: The Need for Labour Market and Institutional Reform" (Andre Kraak). The bibliography contains 52 references. (MN)

In the past four decades, transdisciplinarity has gained conceptual and practical traction for its transformative value in accounting for the complex challenges besetting humankind, including social relations and natural ecosystems. The need to develop frameworks for joint problem-solving involving diverse stakeholders is unquestionable. Besides generating inclusivity, which embraces academia, civil society, and policymakers in the public and private sectors, transdisciplinarity allows for the appreciation of phenomena from a multiplicity of angles and affords societies creative ways of seeking solutions to challenges that may appear intractable. This book puts forward alternatives within this arena and attempts to directly respond to the multilayered challenges of diffuse disciplines, interlinked socioeconomic problems, impacts of globalization, technological advancements, environmental concerns, food security, and more.

This text analyses how technical colleges have responded to the emerging field of further education and training (FET) in South Africa. The data and theories presented are the result of research conducted by the Human Sciences Research Council, including surveys of technical college graduates and employers on their satisfaction with college graduates and institutional profiles of local labor markets. The international case studies of vocational and technical education demonstrate the interrelatedness of education and training systems.

How can open and distance learning and information and communications technology (ICT) provide us with more - and better - teachers? Open and distance learning is increasingly used in teacher education in developing and developed countries. It has the potential to strengthen and expand the teaching profession of the twenty-first century and to help achieve the target of education for all by 2015. Teacher Education Through Open and Distance Learning examines the case for using open and distance learning and ICT to train our educators. It describes and analyses the ways in which these methods and technologies are used for: *initial teacher training and continuing professional development *training principals and school managers *training those who provide non-formal adult and community education *communities of practice and sharing of knowledge and ideas within the teaching profession It also discusses the policy-making, management, technology, costing, evaluation and quality assurance aspects of this work. The contributors are outstanding practitioners in the field. The first review in over a decade, Teacher Education Through Open and Distance Learning draws on wide-ranging and international experience to summarise the strengths and weaknesses of new approaches to the education of teachers. It offers invaluable guidance to policymakers, planners, headteachers and teachers.
