"Vivid and engaging."—Publishers Weekly, starred review Embrace the Power Inside You It's no wonder that introversion is making headlines—half of all Americans are introverts. But if that describes you—are you making the most of your inner strength? Psychologist and introvert Laurie Helgoe unveils the genius of introversion. Introverts gain energy and power through reflection and solitude. Our culture, however, is geared toward the extrovert. The pressure to get out there and get happier can lead people to think that an inward orientation is a problem instead of an opportunity. Helgoe shows that the exact opposite is true: introverts can capitalize on this inner source of power. Introvert Power is a blueprint for how introverts can take full advantage of this hidden strength in daily life. Revolutionary and invaluable, Introvert Power includes ideas for how introverts can learn to: •Claim private space •Bring a slower tempo into daily life •Deal effectively with parties, interruptions, and crowds Quiet is might. Solitude is strength. Introversion is power. "A modern-day Thoreau."—Stephen Bertman, author of The Eight Pillars of Greek Wisdom

"A provocative and powerful collection of eclectic writings on the central moral issue of our times". -- Jonathan Kozol, author of Amazing Grace: The Lives of Children and the Conscience of a Nation "Double Exposure delivers a double dose of smart writing, controlled anger, and devasting common sense". -- Barbara Ehrenreich, author of Worst Years of Our Lives: Irreverent Notes from a Decade of Greed This book provides the most up-to-date and comprehensive review of the major topics surrounding our country s most troublesome and seemingly intractable social problem: the intersection of race and poverty. The sixty-three contributions -- by some of the nation's leading thinkers and activists (Nathan Glazer, Roger Wilkins, Senator Bill Bradley, Brent Staples, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Manning Marable, Howard Winant, Benjamin DeMott, Max Frankel, Herbert Gans, Henry Hampton, Julian Bond, and many others), representing a variety of disciplines and backgrounds -- are organized under seven key topics: affirmative action; the "permanence of racism" thesis; the use and utility of racial and ethnic categories; multiculturalism; immigration; the "underclass" debate; and democracy/equality.

Readers will be able to relate to this book in different ways depending on their own life's story. To some it's a simple romantic love story, Joan is a young naive woman who falls in love and loses her heart to the first man to treat her like a woman - it's love at first sight! They marry and have a child intent on living a simple life. She loves her family and would do anything for them. Then she is faced with a choice... take the elixir offered to her by a 'family friend' or die...Another reader may pick up on the challenges Joan faces when immortality leaves her with no escape from life with an abusive husband. 'Til death us do part' no longer holds the romantic dreams of a happy life together, but becomes a nightmare.A more discerning reader might actually recognise the theme running throughout the story... it's Carol's version of how the puppet show Punch and Judy came into existence. A woman who uses her love of dolls to not only entertain and teach her young child right from wrong, but also to help her cope with life's challenges, for they are her family, her friends... her only friends she can turn to when all seems lost!

Coco Plotnick Hollander Harding, a columnist for Connecticut’s Seaport Gazette, relishes two things in life: food and sex. While the first can be satisfied with a delectable foie gras, her cravings for the latter leave her with hunger pangs of a different sort–particularly since her WASPy husband is not exactly a gourmand in the bedroom. While covering a Chaîne des Rôtisseurs vegetarian banquet for the Gazette, Coco finds her appetite whetted by a very charming (and very married) plastic surgeon, Harry Troutman. The two foodies quickly commence a feast of hot infidelity, but anonymous letters sent to Coco’s husband and Harry’s sleek, self-indulgent wife, Eclaire, hint at the torrid affair . . . and provide the crucial ingredients in a recipe for disaster. Will the lovers receive their just desserts? In this lip-smacking debut novel, Judith Marks-White whips up a five-course meal of saucy wit, steamy sex, and tantalizing scandal that will fill your plate and please your palate. NEW YORK CITY, the near future: Mitchell Zukor, a gifted young mathematician, is hired by a mysterious new financial consulting firm, FutureWorld. The business operates out of a cavernous office in the Empire State Building; Mitchell is employee number two. He is asked to calculate worst-case scenarios in the most intricate detail, and his schemes are sold to corporations to indemnify them against any future disasters. This is the cutting edge of corporate irresponsibility, and business is booming. As Mitchell immerses himself in the mathematics of catastrophe—ecological collapse, global war, natural disasters—he becomes obsessed by a culture's fears. Yet he also loses touch with his last connection to reality: Elsa Bruner, a friend with her own apocalyptic secret, who has started a commune in Maine. Then, just as Mitchell's predictions reach a nightmarish crescendo, an actual worst-case scenario overtakes Manhattan. Mitchell realizes he is uniquely prepared to profit. But at what cost? At once an all-too-plausible literary thriller, an unexpected love story, and a philosophically searching inquiry into the nature of fear, Nathaniel Rich's Odds Against Tomorrow poses the ultimate questions of imagination and civilization. The future is not quite what it used to be. An NPR Best Book of 2013

Sharing a Thought with Lagniappe

We see many devotional books written today with hopes of getting God’s children to be a devout servant. The church has many spiritual anemic members living day after day on a poor diet of the Holy Scriptures. The idea to write a devotional book came to me under the power of the Holy Spirit. The devotional thoughts with lagniappe came as I gave myself fully to my Lord. Under His leadership, I moved forward in obedience to share my love for the lost and never once had difficulty writing with Parkinson´s. Very few people knew how to spell “lagniappe”, while most everyone knew what it meant and enjoyed the practice of giving or receiving the small extra gift. These devotional thoughts are written in a simple way so to appeal and be understood by all age groups. There is nothing complicated about the love of God. Share the lagniappe with a hug, smile, tender touch, kindness, small gifts, and love.
