Rearview Mirror Reflections depicts the family biographical reflections of one who was born and reared in the Deep South during the late 1940s. This narrative presents a collection of illuminating short stories and incidents that reveals the delightful, difficult, and sometimes complicated experiences of my childhood. These informative reflected stories, events, people, and places were collected as the remembrance of them flowed from my richly endowed memories. However, the presentation of hem will not always be arranged in the order in which these experiences occurred. Life has a way of beckoning at us from our past. Reflections of it show up as bright as the noonday sun alluding to the fact that it has in some way shaped our present day. Experiences and lessons learned stare toward us with clear perceptions of those former days. The joys and the sorrows of our family still stand out as markers of progressiveness and accomplishments. Nowhere has it been known of as having a childhood such as ours. As I was growing up I did not have anything to compare my life with. So, I simply accepted things as they were. Nevertheless, my growing up years holds many fond memories that I would not have traded for anything else. Therefore, many of my reflections may seem somewhat amusing, and maybe incredible to believe by some, or even a bit absurd. Nevertheless, they all identify my youth as I reflect upon my childhood. It is my hope that you will enjoy reading my family biographical reflections as well as I did in sharing them with you.

In this lively book, John Macnamara shows how a number of important thinkers through the ages have approached problems of mental representation and the acquisition of knowledge. He discusses the relevance of these approaches to modern cognitive psychology, focusing on central themes that he believes have strongly influenced modern psychology. This is not a neutral historical survey, but a vehicle for Macnamara's compelling and provocative arguments on the relevance and worth of certain aspects of psychological and philosophical thought. The historical figures discussed are quite varied—from Plato to Thomas Jefferson to Sigmund Freud—and include numerous Christian philosophers such as Augustine and Thomas Aquinas. The book assumes no previous background in the subject matter; Macnamara often simplifies abstract concepts via homespun examples (many using his beloved dog, Freddie). This is a quirky, engaging book, as well as the last work by a highly influential figure in cognitive psychology.

"Life is meant to be lived " Books communicate ideas, yes, but they are more than that. The book you are holding, along with Greg's previous writing (A Journey Shared, 2005), invites you on a journey. It's the life he has lived over the past year or so-shared. It's the ups and the downs, not compressed into scholarly jargon, but hopefully fresh and real, and like a conversation at the corner cafe. There are some deep things in this book, and some more light-hearted. Subjects ranging from the character of God (love, grace, mercy), to life with small kids, to divorce and blended families, to death, taxes, and a whole section on money. But all of it is an invitation to think along with the author, to travel together on the path trod over the past twelve months. The book does not assume to present all the answers to the questions posed. Certainly not. But Greg has pondered the side things, and invites you to do that with him.

It was September 1983 when Joseph Horvath began questioning whether he belonged at Culver Academies, a boarding-prep-military private school in Indiana. A veteran public school teacher but new to private boarding school life, Horvath struggled to find his niche and embrace the notion that the staff and students were family. Yet it was not long before private lessons with a student led him to realize he did indeed belong. In a candid memoir, Horvath chronicles his thirty-four years teaching at the Culver Academies while offering insights into his experiences both in and out of the classroom. As he details his encounters with students as he guided them through lessons, Horvath shines a light on how educators coach their pupils to greatness and belief in their abilities through patience, time, and gentle encouragement. Throughout his story, Horvath reveals the challenges, and poignant and humorous moments that teachers often face on a daily basis while contemplating those who most influenced him in his own journey. From the Rearview Mirror shares reflections from a seasoned educator as he looks back on his tenure at Culver Academies in Indiana.

“A great read… Goldberg is an excellent guide.”—Mario Livio, bestselling author of The Golden Ratio Physicist Dave Goldberg speeds across space, time and everything in between showing that our elegant universe—from the Higgs boson to antimatter to the most massive group of galaxies—is shaped by hidden symmetries that have driven all our recent discoveries about the universe and all the ones to come. Why is the sky dark at night? If there is anti-matter, can there be anti-people? Why are past, present, and future our only options? Saluting the brilliant but unsung female mathematician Emmy Noether as well as other giants of physics, Goldberg answers these questions and more, exuberantly demonstrating that symmetry is the big idea—and the key to what lies ahead.

The Victorians in the Rearview Mirror

When Margaret Thatcher called in 1979 for a return to Victorian values such as hard work, self-reliance, thrift, and national pride, Labour Party leader Neil Kinnock responded that “Victorian values” also included “cruelty, misery, drudgery, squalor, and ignorance.” The Victorians in the Rearview Mirror is an in-depth look at the ways that the twentieth century reacted to and reimagined its predecessor. It considers how the Victorian inheritance has been represented in literature, politics, film, and visual culture; the ways in which modernists and progressives have sought to differentiate themselves from an image of the Victorian; and how conservatives (and some liberals) have sought to revive elements of nineteenth-century life. Nostalgic and critical impulses combine to fix an understanding of the Victorians in the popular imagination. Simon Joyce examines heritage culture, contemporary politics, and the “neo-Dickensian” novel to offer a more affirmative assessment of the Victorian legacy, one that lets us imagine a model of social interconnection and interdependence that has come under threat in today's politics and culture. Although more than one hundred years have passed since the death of Queen Victoria, the impact of her time is still fresh. The Victorians in the Rearview Mirror speaks to diverse audiences in literary and cultural studies, in addition to those interested in visual culture and contemporary politics, and situates detailed close readings of literary and cinematic texts in the context of a larger argument about the legacies of an era not as distant as we might like to think.
