A groundbreaking examination of a little-known but defining episode in early modern Jewish history A refugee crisis of huge proportions erupted as a result of the mid-seventeenth-century wars in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Tens of thousands of Jews fled their homes, or were captured and trafficked across Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. Rescue the Surviving Souls is the first book to examine this horrific moment of displacement and flight, and to assess its social, economic, religious, cultural, and psychological consequences. Drawing on a wealth of primary sources in twelve languages, Adam Teller traces the entire course of the crisis, shedding fresh light on the refugee experience and the various relief strategies developed by the major Jewish centers of the day. Teller pays particular attention to those thousands of Jews sent for sale on the slave markets of Istanbul and the extensive transregional Jewish economic network that coalesced to ransom them. He also explores how Jewish communities rallied to support the refugees in central and western Europe, as well as in Poland-Lithuania, doing everything possible to help them overcome their traumatic experiences and rebuild their lives. Rescue the Surviving Souls offers an intimate study of an international refugee crisis, from outbreak to resolution, that is profoundly relevant today.

Rescue for the Dead

Christianity is a religion of salvation in which believers have always anticipated post-mortem bliss for the faithful and non-salvation for others. Here, Trumbower examines how and why death came to be perceived as such a firm boundary of salvation. Analyzing exceptions to this principle from ancient Christianity, he finds that the principle itself was slow to develop and not universally accepted in the Christian movement's first four hundred years. In fact, only in the West was this principle definitively articulated, due in large part to the work and influence of Augustine.

Excerpt: "A lady and her husband were hiking in the desert when a little, white something came running toward them at top speed. The blur turned out to be a Boxer with coyotes close on his tail. Rocky had been stray for at least a month before being taken into rescue, probably surviving by picking oranges from nearby orchards and then peeling them to enjoy the fruits of his labor (we have seen his talent with our own eyes). As a rescue volunteer, I was asked to foster Rocky, but I did not. I adopted him! Dubbed The Little Ambassador, Rocky turned out to be the perfect big brother for all foster dogs who passed through our home, nurturing them with love, patience, and understanding." -"Judy Bailey" Read more about Rocky and many other amazing Boxers inside!

"Second Line Rescue chronicles the brave and creative acts through which Gulf Coast people rescued their neighbors during the chaotic aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Ordinary citizens joined in with whatever resources they had. Unlike many of the official responders, vernacular rescuers found ways around the paralysis. They were able to dispel unfounded fears produced by erroneous or questionable reporting. The essays, personal narratives, media reports, and field studies presented here all have to do with effective and often ingenious answers that emerged from the people themselves. The first part of the collection deals with Gulf Coast rescuers from outside stricken communities: those who, safe in their own homes and neighborhoods, marshaled their resources to help their fellow citizens. The second part features the words of hurricane survivors displaced from New Orleans and other Gulf Coast communities to Houston, Texas. In many cases, the "victims" themselves were the first responders, rescuing family, friends, and strangers. All of the stories, whether from the "outside" or "inside" responders, reveal a shared history of close-knit community bonds, survival skills sharpened by hard times, and what went right in the aftermath of Katrina and Rita--in spite of all that went so wrong"--

Can he be trusted?Finding God When Life's Not Fair chronicles Lee's journey of hope and courage as she struggled with her faith during her darkest days. Offering no easy answers but plenty of hard-won wisdom, she writes honestly about how deep pain can run--and offers a compelling argument that God's love runs deeper still. Rescue Me is the story of one man’s journey to understand God. Surviving salvation, Bible College and full time ministry, Van discovers there is something more to Christianity, something more to having a soul and something more of God. “The only way I found to break free of Religion was to become an atheist. I had to throw away all I had been taught about the god of my youth in order meet the god of my adulthood. I had to be brave enough that if I threw everything away, and there was nothing left, including God, I had to be OK with it.”
