So you want to be a teacher? is designed to assist prospective, and even current, teaching students in making the right decision about their future career. The authors draw on their combined experience as classroom teacher, principal and systems leader to paint an engaging, practical and comprehensive picture of what it is to be a teacher - whether primary or secondary, in whatever educational sector. The book explores why you might want to be a teacher, why you might not, and the qualities of a successful teacher, so that you can consider whether you fit the profile. The authors describe what teachers actually do with their time, and the pay and conditions. They look at how you will train to be teacher, and how you might specialise. They explain what employers will expect of you, and how you can ensure you succeed, and offer a peek into the future, when you might be graduating. And importantly, they provide the real life account of one teacher's journey, and the experience of another in beginning teaching.

From discussing the necessity of having one’s own, personal philosophy of teaching to suggestions on dealing with students, fellow teacher, and administrative staff, Mertz stresses personal interaction, attention paid to the individual, and above all, the ability to turn every question and classroom occurrence into a teaching opportunity. This is a “must read” for anyone contemplating entering the teaching profession . . . and an entertaining read for anyone who has ever taught.

So You Want to Be a Teacher is a bit of light reading in a troubled world today. I left names by the wayside and emphasized actions, especially innovative behavior. The students I enjoyed were full of mischief, but for the most part, it was simply that—mischief. Very few of the students I taught in my forty years were bad—they just needed a bit of love and understanding. Who cares what Socrates said when you are a student who had no supper the night before? I try to be a stepping-stone, not a stumbling block.

So You Think You Might Like to Teach 23 Fictional Teachers For Real Model How to Become and Remain a Successful Teacher

I began teaching in 1964 and am still at it. Thanks to the values of my parents and my maternal grandmother (Beba), as well as to their high expectations for me, I learned at a young age that no matter how old I got, I would always be a student. Later I learned that I would always be a teacher. Not only is that combination of student and teacher an unbeatable one, it is a necessary one if by a "successful" teacher we mean a person whose humanity is expressed through what is both a calling and a career. (Geoffrey Chaucer put it more poetically in The Canterbury Tales: "And gladly would he learn, and gladly teach.") This is a book about answering the call to become a teacher and working to be an effective one (whatever your subject but generally on the secondary school level). So You Think You Might Like to Teach features the classroom experiences of 23 fictional teachers and the practical lessons they learned from their successes and failures about what happens of value on both sides of the teachers desk. This book's 23 "novel" role models (from contemporary and classic works of literature) may not be actual but they are quite real (flaws and all); and although some of them may be larger than life, all are true to life both in and out of the classroom. I've chosen these particular fictional teachers for you to learn from because "you think you might like to teach." I suspect, and hope, that you want to become the best possible teacher you can be and never have to worry about burnout. Your joy in your career and your students' joy in your joy will depend on it. And so I wish you the best should you decide to profoundly affect the lives of, let's say, 151 very special human beings in the next school year: 150 students and you, their teacher. The underlying and thoroughly integrated premise of this text is to help students uncover whether they are a "good fit" for the teaching profession. In Part I, the author asks students to reflect on why they want to teach and to consider who they are, and whether "who they are" is a teacher. In Parts II, III, and IV, the text moves on to cover the traditional topics of the course; through both the pedagogy and the exposition, the author continues to ask readers to reflect on how the information she is providing affects their decision to pursue teaching. Along with the theme of the text, the author stresses the two most important topics in K-12 education today and their impact in the classroom: the effect of technology and the Internet on teaching and learning, and the importance of understanding the roles that diversity and culture play in the lives of teachers and their students.
