Gyrodynamics and Its Engineering Applications deals with the engineering applications of gyrodynamics in a manner that stresses the physical concepts. Topics covered range from the kinematics of rigid bodies to frames of reference, along with moments and products of inertia. Gyro-verticals and the gyrodynamics of machines are also considered. Comprised of 16 chapters, this book begins with a historical background on gyroscopes and an introduction to vectors, the kinematics of a particle, and rotating systems. The emphasis is on certain fundamental ideas governing the movement of bodies in three dimensions. Motion with respect to moving axes is discussed in detail, with particular attention to the intangible Coriolis acceleration. Subsequent chapters focus on the inertial characteristics of bodies and certain dynamical theorems; the motion of a free body and of a symmetrical gyroscope under gravity; gyroscopic vibration absorbers and stabilizers; the gyro-compass; suspensions for gyroscopes; gyro-verticals; and rate and integrating gyroscopes. The book also discusses inertial navigation as well as the whirling of shafts and aircraft gyrodynamics. This monograph is intended primarily for engineers, but should also prove valuable to university teachers, research workers, and those who encounter gyroscopic problems.

The papers in this volume were presented at an International Symposium on Optimal Estimation in Approximation Theory which was held in Freudenstadt, Federal Republic of Germany, September 27-29, 1976. The symposium was sponsored by the IBM World Trade Europe/Middle East/Africa Corporation, Paris, and IBM Germany. On behalf of all the participants we wish to express our appreciation to the spon sors for their generous support. In the past few years the quantification of the notion of com plexity for various important computational procedures (e. g. multi plication of numbers or matrices) has been widely studied. Some such concepts are necessary ingredients in the quest for optimal, or nearly optimal, algorithms. The purpose of this symposium was to present recent results of similar character in the field or ap proximation theory, as well as to describe the algorithms currently being used in important areas of application of approximation theory such as: crystallography, data transmission systems, cartography, reconstruction from x-rays, planning of radiation treatment, optical perception, analysis of decay processes and inertial navigation system control. It was the hope of the organizers that this con frontation of theory and practice would be of benefit to both groups. This book is to serve as a text for engineering students at the senior or beginning graduate level in a second course in dynamics. It grew out of many years experience in teaching such a course to senior students in mechanical engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. While temperamentally disinclined to engage in textbook writing, I nevertheless wrote the present volume for the usual reason-I was unable to find a satisfactory English-language text with the content covered in my inter mediate course in dynamics. Originally, I had intended to fit this text very closely to the content of my dynamics course for seniors. However, it soon became apparent that that course reflects too many of my personal idiosyncracies, and perhaps it also covers too little material to form a suitable basis for a general text. Moreover, as the manuscript grew, so did my interest in certain phases of the subject. As a result, this book contains more material than can be studied in one semester or quarter. My own course covers Chapters 1 to 5 (Chapters 1,2, and 3 lightly) and Chapters 8 to 20 (Chapter 17 lightly).
