College athletes are at the very center of emerging campus debates over their legal, financial, and academic role. Amid ongoing litigation and pressure from internal and external stakeholders, many policy makers and university leaders are scrambling to determine the nature of this role. This timely and comprehensive volume identifies and discusses bylaws and legal decisions that have impacted the college athlete’s ability to pursue higher education. It also explains and critiques the formal policies of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and member institutions while examining critical issues relevant to the growing fields of sport management, athletic administration, and sports law. Aimed at anyone seeking to enhance their understanding of the intercollegiate athletics landscape, College Athletes’ Rights and Well-Being is divided into four sections. The first lays out the historical foundations that have shaped the intercollegiate athletic experience. Subsequent sections describe the principles, structures, and conditions that influence how athletes experience campus life, as well as the increasingly commercialized business enterprise of college sports. Told from the perspective of athletes and written by leading scholars and researchers, the book’s sixteen chapters are enhanced with useful lists of key terms and conversation-provoking discussion questions. Touching on everything from concussion protocols and collective bargaining to amateurism, Title IX’s gender-separate allowance, and conference realignment, this important book is designed for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students, scholars, educators, practitioners, policy makers, athletic administrators, and advocates of college athletes.

The ACC's first 50 years tells the story of the Atlantic Coast Conference from its inception until 2002. The story will show the people and the politics behind the creation of one of the nation's most successful collegiate sports leagues. The athletes and coaches who have been so successful weave a thread throughout the book, but so will the ongoing tension between academics and athletics that has been a part of this conference from the beginning. And the book will also take a look at the impact our society and its struggles have had on the conference and athletics, such as the integration of the 1960s and 1970s and the effect of the African-American athlete on college sports and the ACC

As Doctor Shea guides the reader through the labyrinth of contemporary ethical issues prevalent in sport, he presents, as the chief distinguishing feature of the text, a method or systematic model to deal with the core of ethical issues with which the entire field of competitive sport must struggle - power, and how to ethically manage it; success, and how to achieve it with integrity; conflict, and how to morally resolve it. The model, designed to logically structure thinking, allows one to apply an internal compass to guide them in judgment formation regarding the right ethical decision or action in sports. The method is intended to assist players, coaches, fans, governing officers of national sport organizations, and especially students preparing for careers in the sports field. The book contains thirty-three sport action photographs and interpretative captions which illustrate ethical or unethical actions of players, coaches, officials, and fans. A section of challenging questions and contemporary ethical incidents for discussion use conclude each chapter and will be of special interest to students. The text also provides current codes from four major categories of sport environments with a base of questions relating to application techniques, effectiveness in operation and interpretation.
