Long before Magellan entered the Pacific in 1521 Westerners entertained ideas of undiscovered oceans, mighty continents, and paradisal islands at the far ends of the earth-such ideas would have a long life and a deep impact in both the Pacific and the West. With the discovery of Tahiti in 1767 another powerful myth was added to this collection: the noble savage. For the first time Westerners were confronted by a people who seemed happier than themselves. This revolution in the human sciences was accompanied by one in the natural sciences after Darwin's momentous visit to the Galapagos Islands. The Pacific produced other challenges for nineteenth-century researchers on race and culture, and for those intent on exporting their religions to this immense quarter of the globe. As the century wore on, the region presented opportunities and dilemmas for the imperial powers, a process was accelerated by the Pacific War between 1941 and 1945. Strangers in the South Seas recounts and illustrates this story using a wealth of primary texts. It includes generous excerpts from the work of explorers, soldiers, naturalists, anthropologists, artists, and writers--some famous, some obscure. It shows how "the Great South Sea" has been an irreplaceable "distant mirror" of the West and its intellectual obsessions since the Renaissance.

Alls Fair In Love And Mystery There are two stories in this book, two mysteries laced with love stories. The first one, One Huge Mountain, concerns a young woman whose husband nearly beat to death. She is left with no memory except for the past three years since she awoke from the coma. She begins a new life in a different city, unaware that her now ex-husband is searching for her. He does not intend to let her live after he finds the formula for the mind-altering drug he hopes to sell. Will the authorities, who are not persuaded that she is amnesic, be able to find her and keep her safe, now that her husband has escaped from prison? The second story is about a mother who never gives up hope that her toddler is alive, even though there is no evidence that supports her maternal instinct. Nearly everyone in the city believes that both young Roger and his father died in the fiery crash. Everyone, that is, except her best friend, her friends husband and his twin brother. Its been a year, and the police, though sympathetic, feel that it was a tragic accident and the case has been closed. Where do the four friends begin to prove that a mothers intuition is not a myth but a fact? Deni Hoffman #54094 Alls fair in Love and Mystery

'Highsmith's novels are peerlessly disturbing . . . bad dreams that keep us thrashing for the rest of the night' New Yorker Sydney Bartleby has killed his wife. At least, he has thought about it, compulsively, repeatedly, plotting schemes, designing escapes, forging alibis. Of course he has; he's a thriller writer. He even knows how to dispose of her body. But when Alicia takes a long, unannounced holiday, Sydney descends into the treacherous world of his own fantasy. A masterpiece of noir fantasy in which Highsmith revels in eliciting the unsettling psychological forces that lurk beneath the surface of everyday life.
