Shirley is a teenage boy with a girl’s name, growing up in suburbia and feeling like the weirdest kid in the school. Nothing makes much sense to him, and his heart belongs to a classmate who barely knows he exists. Wound Man is an unconventional superhero, sprung from the pages of a medieval medical textbook, with an alarming assortment of weapons sticking out from every part of his body. Wound Man has just moved into a house on Shirley’s street – and he happens to have a vacancy for a teenage sidekick... A funny and touching story by Chris Goode about two unlikely friends and the adventures they share.‘A simple, unaffected piece of storytelling... There is something so unguarded, almost childlike, about this show that you can't help but fall in love with it’ 4 stars – Guardian ‘told with humour and bags of charm... The Adventures of Wound Man and Shirley tells a familiar tale in a refreshing and imaginative way to leave us amused and moved.’ 4 stars – What’s On Stage

Essential for students of theatre studies, Methuen Drama's Decades of Modern British Playwriting series provides a comprehensive survey and study of the theatre produced in each decade from the 1950s to 2009 in six volumes. Each volume features a critical analysis and reevaluation of the work of four/five key playwrights from that decade authored by a team of experts, together with an extensive commentary on the period . Edited by Dan Rebellato, Modern British Playwriting: 2000-2009 provides an authoritative and stimulating reassessment of the theatre of the decade, together with a detailed study of the work of David Greig (Nadine Holdsworth), Simon Stephens (Jacqueline Bolton), Tim Crouch (Dan Rebellato), Roy Williams (Michael Pearce) and Debbie Tucker Green (Lynette Goddard). The volume sets the context by providing a chronological survey of the decade, one marked by the War on Terror, the excesses of economic globalization and the digital revolution. In surveying the theatrical activity and climate, Andrew Haydon explores the response to the political events, the rise of verbatim theatre, the increasing experimentation and the effect of both the Boyden Report and changes in the Arts Council's priorities. Five scholars provide detailed examinations of the playwrights' work during the decade, combining an analysis of their plays with a study of other material such as early play drafts and the critical receptions of the time. Interviews with each playwright further illuminate this stimulating final volume in the Decades of Modern British Playwriting series.

This book explores the critical field of theatre sound and the sonic phenomena of theatre. It draws together a wide range of related topics, including sound design and sonic sonographies, voice as a performance of sound, listening as auditory performance, and audience as resonance. It explores radical forms of sonic performance and our engagement in it, from the creation of sonic subjectivities to noise as a politics of sound. The introductory chapters trace the innate aurality of theatre and the history of sound effects and design, while also interrogating why the art of theatre sound was delayed and underrepresented in philosophy as well as theatre and performance theory. Subsequent chapters explore the emergence of aurally engaged theatre practice and focus on examples of contemporary sound in and as theatre, including theatre in the dark, headphone theatre and immersive theatre, amongst others, through theories of perception and philosophies of listening, vocality, sonority and noise.

When you're a child you don't really think... cos you like to live like a child. Doesn't really seem you're just going to be an adult. Like time flies by and you just want... to, like, stay as a child, but you just enjoy things, the way it goes. Award‐winning writer Chris Goode asked thirty 8‐10 year olds to talk about their lives, their thoughts, their world. In Monkey Bars their words are spoken by adults. Not adults playing children, but adults playing adults, in adult situations. Monkey Bars is a revelatory verbatim show that is funny, touching and endlessly surprising.

An incendiary piece of experimental storytelling from three-time Fringe First winner Chris Goode. Framed by two violent deaths – the apparently inexplicable suicide of a young gay man, and the murder of Drummer Lee Rigby outside the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich in May 2013 – Men in the Cities is a compelling piece about harm and complicity, and about the forces that shape our relationships. Through fractured snapshots of seemingly disconnected lives, Men in the Cities presents a challenging but radically humane portrait of how we live now.

A collection of three books from wise, witty, fearless, and award-winning film actress, Shirley Maclaine. The Camino: The story of Shirley Maclaine’s riveting and difficult pilgrimage along the Santiago de Compostela Camino in Spain, a journey that proved as much spiritual as physical. Following in the footsteps of the legendary figures who took the Camino before her, Shirley leads us with her trademark grace and insight on a sacred adventure that promises readers the journey of a thousand lifetimes. Out on a Leash: The fun, comical, and surprisingly inspiring account of how Shirley Maclaine found true, unconditional love in a furry bundle of canine charms—her dog Terry. This charming, witty, and ultimately wise memoir is an irresistible bonbon for the legions of MacLaine readers, and for dog lovers everywhere. Sage-ing While Age-ing: Sparked by the experience of moving into a new house, in this book Shirley Maclaine is inspired to look back across the remarkable professional and personal milestones she has experienced so far; doing so, she confronts the realities and rewards of growing older, and reflects on the greater understanding of her own place in the universe.

Hangman's Brae is a vividly written account of the blood-curdling crimes and brutal forms of punishment of north-east Scotland. The book explores the area's underworld and features the grave-robbers, jail-breakers, rioters and other lawbreakers whose crimes led them to premature deaths at the end of a rope or at the not so delicate hands of The Maiden, a gruesome decapitating device pre-dating the French guillotine.
