Set eighty years in the future, this novel by the best-selling author Michael O'Brien is about an expedition sent from the planet Earth to Alpha Centauri, the star closest to our solar system. The Kosmos, a great ship that the central character Neil de Hoyos describes as a "flying city", is immense in size and capable of more than half light-speed. Hoyos is a Nobel Prize winning physicist who has played a major role in designing the ship. Hoyos has signed on as a passenger because he desires to escape the seemingly benign totalitarian government that controls everything on his home planet. He is a skeptical and quirky misanthropic humanist with old tragedies, loves, and hatreds that are secreted in his memory. The surprises that await him on the voyage-and its destination-will shatter all of his assumptions and point him to a true new horizon. Science fiction and fantasy literature are genres that have become dominant forces in contemporary worldwide culture. Our fascination with the near-angelic powers of new technology, its benefits and dangers, its potential for obsession and catastrophe, raises vital questions that this work explores about human nature and the cosmos, about man's image of himself and where he is going-and why he seeks to go there.

For fifteen-thousand years, the elves have battled the hippocamp races to protect their homeland. Though it has been this way for untold ages, war will always touch some more than others. Socair has dedicated her life to being a warrior. She is a pillar of strength and justice, but those around her do not always share her purity of motivation. Óraithe has never led a gifted life and neither would she wish for one. The highborn elves of the desert have made her life miserable and she can think of no better way to repay them but in kind. Rianaire is the carefree ruler of the mountain elves of the north. While her rule has given the elves of Spéirbaile an age of prosperity, not all among her court appreciate the way she has moved from the values of the past. Aile is a Drow who loves coin and secrets. Far too pragmatic to be called a hedonist, she goes where the trail of coin leads and does what is asked, no matter the cost to those upon whom her blades are turned. Each of them will find that war does not just occur on the fields of battle. Each of them will be touched by the cost of their own war, some more than others.

Willy Jack Cortez loves baseball, hunting, fishing, and being outdoors. Except for the fact that he suffers from claustrophobia, he is like any other normal teen. But any normalcy he had in his life changed on his seventeenth birthday when he inherited an alien sword with magical properties from a deceased grandfather whom he's never met. From there Willy's day gets even weirder. He is visited by an alien messenger and learns that his grandfather had been a passenger on the spacecraft that crashed near Roswell, New Mexico in 1947. Furthermore, he also learns from the messenger that his grandfather's true identity was William I, King of Whiterook and Willy is the sole heir to the throne. However, there is one catch. Along with the sword and kingdom, Willy also inherits a prophecy written more than sixty years before his birth, a prophecy which will send him on a quest light years from Earth and plunge him into the medieval world of the four kingdoms, a land of exquisite beauty, yet also filled with many dangers. A land where dragons, gargoyles, elves, demons, and giant birds of prey called Warbirds are all very real. Once there, Willy quickly discovers that being a royal prince is nothing like he had imagined it would be. Not only is it very demanding, but it could also get him killed. As the heir to Whiterook, his very presence has put him on a collision course with a powerful demon lord, named Daemon...and only one of them can live. Willy must rely on his Indian skills learned in the wild and his knowledge of 20th century battle tactics in order to survive. His only weapons are his grandfather's sword, a fierce eagle named Terunga, and a loquacious alien machine called Gyver that speaks directly to his brain.

A Chance to Die is a vibrant portrayal of Amy Carmichael, an Irish missionary and writer who spent fifty-three years in south India without furlough. There she became known as "Amma," or "mother," as she founded the Dohnavur Fellowship, a refuge for underprivileged children. Amy's life of obedience and courage stands as a model for all who claim the name of Christ. She was a woman with desires and dreams, faults and fears, who gave her life unconditionally to serve her Master. Bringing Amma to life through inspiring photos and compelling biographical narrative, Elisabeth Elliot urges readers to examine the depths of their own commitment to Christ.

Murdered in their thousands, worked to death in slave gangs and divided against themselves, the wounds inflicted by man run deep - and elves have very long memories. In The Fallen Elves, book three of The Second Neoluzian War epic fantasy series, the wicked Orc dictator Arkan Spiritstrike, his wizards and military generals are on the verge of laying waste to the elven cities of Balenwood and Oakmantle after destroying the human settlements in the northern lands. This is a time of desperation for the good races because Darius has been lost to lower Neoluzia due to the Gathering of Replenishment spell cast upon him by members of the secretive wizard guild, the Veiled Institution. David Parr, a human from Earth summoned by Darius that reluctantly remains in Neoluzia to assist the Salon of Enlightenment against their Orc enemies, must find the great necromancer Termaplix if the land is to be saved. Finding Termaplix may be impossible however, for the hero from the War of Cleansing has been hidden in a secret place due to unknown circumstances one thousand years ago--a tomb long since forgotten to the current generations in the land. Perilously stifled in their shift away from the old magic and the forced elimination of history, those that Parr seeks to help against the enemy from the north must first learn to embrace the gift of magic again, an art banished in antiquity by the deception of peace and the deep wounds of the surviving populations in the first war.

It seems the monsters have decided they want to play with Santa’s reindeer and ring his bells. If I don’t put a stop to this madness, not only will Santa be their next meal, but children all over the world will wake to a Christmas that never was. Not on my watch …

In the mind’s eye of the author a fairly large settlement exists at the North Pole. There Santa and his elves live, work and spend each year preparing the sleigh full of wonderful things for boys and girls the world around to find under their Christmas tree each year. The centerpiece is Santa’s workshop. It is fitted out with workbenches and tools for the skillful elves to use as they form their creations. Some of the elves are married and live in individual houses on the various residential streets. Most of the single elves live in dormitory rooms above the workshop. There are many other buildings similar to those you might find in any village around the world. There are grocery stores, service stations, clothing stores, a haberdashery, a bakery, a fire station and so on. Santa and Matilda Clause live not far from the workshop in a house attached to a large barn where the reindeer live. It is a large and thriving village populated with a variety of “little people,” Gnomes, Leprechauns, dwarfs, trolls, elves and so on. Across the square from Santa’s workshop is the TDW, an acronym for the Transportation Division Workshop, where all sorts of wheeled conveyances are constructed. With its large warehouse type doors it is the launching point for the numerous parades staged for the most trivial of occasions. Such units as the Dwarf Marching Band, resplendent in bright colored uniforms, and the Marinette Twirlers, also wearing vividly colorful outfits, spill out through those doors to the applause of the other villagers. It is the site of great energy, all pointing to the most important night of the year, Christmas Eve. So give your imagination free reign and you will find these stories fascinating, and entertaining.
