In contrast, the eleven essays in this volume consider the role of images and their relationship to text in the production and transmission of knowledge."--P. [4] of cover.

These long-neglected questions are pursued in Nature in Ireland, a pioneering collection of original essays by leading naturalists, science writers, and cultural historians who bring us from the geological prehistory of Ireland to the environmental threats of the late twentieth century.

This oversized collector's edition showcases antique paintings and drawings of birds and animals from the most important natural history collection in France. An unparalleled collection of the most beautiful--yet scientific--depictions of flora and fauna ever produced, these artworks document three centuries of exploration of the far reaches of the world--a rich visual record harking back to a time when science relied upon painstaking human illustration as the only way to record exotic plants and unknown animals observed during voyages of discovery. All the artworks included here were depicted on vellum, a high-quality, long-lasting parchment that fell out of use around 1900 when it was supplanted by photography. France's national collection consists of over 7,000 such artworks and is among the world's finest. Flora and fauna from every corner of the globe are represented in precisely rendered color and detail. Sadly, many of the species depicted in these masterful yet hauntingly accurate portraits are now endangered, threatened--or in many cases, already extinct. This volume is both a celebration of the human quest for knowledge and an epitaph for a fast disappearing world--as well as a feast for the eyes for anyone who loves birds or vintage natural history art. This exquisite and timeless book is beautifully presented in a jacketed volume within a slipcase and luxuriously packaged within an illustrated mailer with a handle for portability.

This spectacularly illustrated book chronicles the exciting progress of scientific investigation through the ages as it has been mirrored in the art used to document its ideas and breakthroughs. From the cave paintings of prehistory through the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Assyria, and Greece to Renaissance drawings and modern microscopy, these images reveal the hidden influences and cultural pressures of their times. Separate chapters focus on the animal world, herbs and the birth of botany, physics and the science of non-living matter, mankind in the world; the world in space; and other seminal topics. The illustrations have been chosen from among the best preserved in the world, some never before reproduced. All help to show how scientific illustration first arose; how it mirrored in many ways the value systems of the science of its time; how images were borrowed, transformed, and occasionally came to predict future discoveries. 210 illustrations.

An A - Z of Australian plants, organised alphabetically by scientific botanical name. Each species is accompanied by a botanical illustration of the plant. A brief account of where the plant grows in Australia, a description of its growth habit and an interesting feature of the species accompanies each image. Plants were sourced from within the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, Melbourne Gardens as well as throughout Australia. The paintings are all done by a group of botanical artists, affectionately known as the Whirlybirds. As members of the Friends of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne, these artists meet weekly in one of the Observatory buildings located within the Melbourne Gardens, to paint, share knowledge about botanical art and assist each other to develop their skills. State and territory floral emblems are represented in the book. It also features some iconic Australian flowers as well as some unusual and rather unassuming plants, showing the beauty in all Australian flora. The images also show the excellent standard these artists have reached in botanical illustration. Many of the artists exhibit in the Melbourne Friends biennial 'The Art of Botanical Illustration', one of the most prestigious botanical art exhibitions in Australia, and some have also exhibited internationally.
