It's 1997 at a mountaintop observatory in Southern California where spacecraft navigator Harris Mitchel and astronomer Diana Muse-Jones discover a dangerous asteroid which may hit the earth within two decades. As the asteroid tumbles through space towards an uncertain impact, Harris and Diana fight bitterly over how to announce their discovery. When Harris goes public to a skeptical world--at the cost of his and Diana's careers--he sends their already turbulent relationship into a blaze of conflicting passions. As his notoriety builds, a fanatical preacher and his unhinged followers stalk him while an obnoxious radio personality provides disruptive help. Harris becomes an unwilling Pied Piper for his own overzealous followers hungry for belief and eager for guidance into an uncertain and tumultuous future. In this science fiction drama the characters battle each other in contests of Damn your world view! against a background of hard science, religion, romance, metaphysical speculation, and the forces of nature versus human passions and dreams. Meanwhile an asteroid hurtles through the solar system and global salvation or disaster hangs in the balance. "A courageous and visionary work ... an instant classic." --BlueInk Reviews

It hit me, the reality of it, in a way it hadn’t before like a sledgehammer straight to the chest. Laura was gone. She was never coming back. I’d never see her again; she’d never hum in the kitchen, she’d never pull Ruby onto her lap and tickle her tummy as she buried her face in the sweet curve of our daughter’s shoulder. Nathan West loved his wife Laura with all his heart. But now she’s gone, taken from him in a seemingly random act of violence. Laura was the glue that held their family together. And for Nathan, life without her feels almost meaningless. As he tries to find hope in the darkness, his three young daughters express their grief in different and challenging ways—with one set on a path of self-destruction that could devastate their family all over again. Desperate to understand his own heartbreak better, he reaches out to others who had known Laura. Including her new friend Maria, whose light and warmth are exactly what their grieving family needs, and who is soon helping out and providing emotional support for them all. But the picture Maria paints of Laura is unfamiliar to Nathan—of a wife who felt ignored, a mother who felt she couldn’t do enough—and he struggles to reconcile it with his own memories of the woman he loved. Is it possible he didn’t know his wife after all? And can he trust Maria? He can’t escape the feeling that she’s keeping something from him. Maria is hiding a secret with the power to rock Nathan’s family to its core. Because it is about what happened the day that Laura died… An insightful and powerful novel guaranteed to break your heart, about how the unthinkable can sometimes help us see the world in a powerful new way. Perfect for fans of Jodi Picoult, Diane Chamberlain, and Susan Lewis. With that, neither of them said anything for a few moments and both realized the song had ended. Looking at each other they imagined an audience applauding to that musical exchange. Benny Goodman and Lionel Hampton would have been jealous had they been there in the audience. They were perhaps busy that morning playing somewhere or maybe even rehearsing for their groundbreaking concert in Carnegie Hall that would take place a few weeks later in January. It was the first time a jazz ensemble had been allowed to perform at Carnegie. Colin and Piper didnt know it, but theres had just been an opening act for themselves, music, and jazz. It would be a good year for improvisation, that year 1938, a

On August 7th 1915, men of the 3rd Light Horse Brigade staged one of the most tragic, brave and futile charges of the First World War. Seeking to break out of the Anzac position at Gallipoli they attempted to storm an extraordinarily strong Turkish position, defended by artillery, machineguns and thousands of men, using nothing but fixed bayonets and raw courage. The first wave of Light Horsemen were killed within seconds of leaving their trench, yet over the course of the next few minutes, three more lines went over the top, across the bodies of their dead and dying comrades, only to be instantly cut down themselves. All of them knew they were about to die. None held back. It was a massacre immortalised in Peter Weir's film, Gallipoli. Just before the order was given to send the third line, Trooper Harold Rush turned to his mate standing next to him and said 'Goodbye cobber. God bless you'. These words appear on his headstone, in the little cemetery near the scene of the charge.John Hamilton's book follows the men who fought and died in this action from the recruiting frenzy of August 1914, to their training camps, to Egypt, to the peninsula itself, to that fatal morning. It is a work of meticulous research and detail, which puts flesh on the bones of long dead men and boys. We see through their eyes the excitement, fear and horror of a generation encountering the carnage of modern war for the first time. Goodbye Cobber, God Bless You is compelling, personal and painfully moving.

A crackling, highly imaginative thriller debut in the vein of W.E.B. Griffin and Philip Kerr, set in German-occupied London at the close of World War II, in which a hardened British detective jeopardizes his own life to save an innocent soul and achieve the impossible—redemption. London, 1946. The Nazis have conquered the British, and now occupy Great Britain, using brutality and fear to control its citizens. John Henry Rossett, a decorated British war hero and former police sergeant, has been reassigned to the Office of Jewish Affairs. He now answers to the SS, one of the most powerful and terrifying organizations in the Third Reich. Rossett is a man accustomed to obeying commands, but he’s now assigned a job he did not ask for—and cannot refuse: rounding up Jews for deportation, including men and women he’s known his whole life. But they are not the only victims, for the war took Rossett’s wife and son, and shattered his own humanity. Then he finds Jacob, a young Jewish child, hiding in an abandoned building, who touches something in Rossett that he thought was long dead. Determined to save the innocent boy, Rossett takes him on the run, with the Nazis in pursuit. But they are not the only hunters following his trail. The Royalist Resistance and the Communists want him, too. Each faction has its own agenda, and Rossett will soon learn that none of them can be trusted . . . and all of them are deadly.

No one is immune to crime. Behind the Darkest Hours is the realization that the road back into living a new life is a process. Victims lives arent neatly wrapped up in a one-hour drama and a myth called closure. You never forget the loss. It is a true inspirational and powerful story of prayer, faith, and forgiveness that brought us from personal tragedies to public triumphs. The general public only gets a glimpse of real-life tragedies from media visualization and media sensationalism, without a real understanding of daily living for the families involved. When bystanders turn off the news, they go to sleep and forget, while those families weep. Behind the Darkest Hours is a source of encouragement and strength to victims and their families to survive beyond the pain and agony of victimization. Its an encouragement for everyone to hold on to hope. Even in the most horrific circumstances, we can still survive. Most importantly, God is still present. Readers should be encouraged to know that God is trustworthy and he honors faith.

A memoir of growing up in a dysfunctional family in the United States during the 1970s and 80s, Lora Lee describes how she responded to a chaotic world by closing in on herself and building a shell around her, a shell which is cracked open when she endures cancer treatment for the second time and is forced to take stock of her life up to that point. Goodbye Mommy explores our relationships with our families, whether completely dysfunctional, adoptive, or more conventional, but the book's real importance lies beyond that in the way it raises the question of how far our families, upbringing and traumas suffered can seriously affect our health, both immediately and in later life. Lora Lee's story is honestly told, without being mawkish or self-pitying. Her recovery from breast cancer provides a happy and hopeful ending.

The short stories in this collection are about contemporary women, the frontiers they must cross to sustain close relationships, and their struggles to balance society's expectations with their own needs. The relationships examined in these stories are with husbands, lovers, parents, children, friends. Present at the same time are other relationships with careers, with the subtleties of corporate life, with parental and spousal obligations, with aging and the passage of time. The recurring issue: What happens when obligations to one's self collide with obligations to others and society's norms?
