Following in the curmudgeonly footsteps of One Grump or Two and The Grumpy Driver’s Handbook, Grumpy Golfer is a compilation of all things miserable about playing golf. Mark Twain famously said, “golf is a good walk spoiled,” but actually it’s a lot worse than that. Golf can be a good life spoiled after you become enraged with the behaviour of a Stableford competitor and bury a sand wedge in a place where it’s impossible to get relief. All the evils of golf are included: the slice, the hook, the snap-hook, the shank, the first tee duff and the yips. There are also sections on annoying hazards, such as lakes, streams, trees, deep bunkers, greenkeepers, dog walkers and bringing along the girlfriend. There are the usual tirades against a variety of golf-themed items: clubhouses, two-tier driving ranges, golf gloves, ladies tees, pitch and putt, the 1-iron, geriatric fourballs, golf magazines, scorecard pencils, Peter Allis, links courses, bizarre putters, metal drivers and winter rules. All in all, a great book for grumps.

For every early adopter, there's an immediate shunner, and here is their book—a glorious technophobic rant about every bit of new technology supposedly designed to make our lives "easier" Filled with wit, observation, and just plain grumpiness, these are the ravings of an analog guy struggling to keep afloat in a digital world. Everywhere he turns he finds technology and gizmos encroaching into his world. When at last he's forced to embrace consumer electronics—with all the enthusiasm of a bank vole nestling up to a peregrine falcon—he finds they go and change the device he's studiously learned. Whether it's his erratic computer, the internet, TV remote controls, his phone, or the washing machine, Ivor is a man easily bewildered. But still he battles on, trying to work out which of his 17 remote controls will have any influence on the television. Along the way he takes large swipes at texting, downloads, MP3 players, voice (lack of) recognition, and suggests a new social networking web site for those of a similar technology-hating disposition—Grumpbook.

Peter Alliss has been entertaining huge TV audiences for the BBC and ABC in America for many years. In this new anecdotal but thoroughly practical book, Peter Alliss sets out to promote golf as the answer to middle-aged discontentment. Peter Alliss has no difficulty giving compelling reasons as to why golf is the perfect game for adults - breathtaking scenery, fresh air, camaraderie and instant therapy. The author describes how to go about taking up the game, what equipment is necessary to buy and who to contact for lessons. With the aid of line drawings, he describes the basic techniques of golf, how to maintain a consistent swing and how to build up self-confidence. GOLF - THE CURE FOR A GRUMPY OLD MAN is aimed at regular golfers whose skills have deteriorated and would-be golfers who need the guidance as to which path to follow. Alliss's humorous but always helpful book will confirm the great game as a really accessible and hugely enjoyable pastime to pursue for both men and women.

Following in the curmudgeonly footsteps of One Grump or Two, The Grumpy Driver's Handbook is a celebration of all that is miserable and tedious on the road. Driving brings out the worst in even the most mild mannered individual and so a book on the worst habits in motoring and the "joys" of car ownership is the natural gift for the career grump. Spurred on by endless roadworks, coned-off lanes, BMW drivers, white van men, speed cameras, lunatic cyclists, rude taxi drivers, and kamikaze motorcyclists, the grump has an ocean of opportunity for expression. The Grumpy Driver's Handbook (including "The Highway Grump") tackles the evils of lane swappers, caravan owners, bumper huggers, rubber neckers, light jumpers, hard shoulder cruisers, sleeping policemen, and speaking policemen.

If you're about to walk down the aisle, you want every day to be as happy as your special day. However while there is lots of advice on planning a wedding, there's precious little to prepare you for the rest of your life together. If you're lucky your mother will offer a few tips and your father will makes some jokes but otherwise you're on your own. Perhaps it's some years since you promised to love and cherish each other and the pressures of everyday life have taken the shine off things. Throw in the sort of crises that everyone faces at some point—like financial problems, losing a parent, family rows and infidelity—and it's easy for the love between the two of you to be seriously damaged. So what are the secrets of happy couples that stay strong rather than grow apart? In this groundbreaking book, marital therapist Andrew G. Marshall, explains that it's not chemistry that keeps partners connected but skills. It's likely that you didn't learn these skills as a child because your parents didn't know them or couldn't explain them. Maybe they avoided conflict, fought like cat or dog or split up when you were young so never showed you to fall out safely, make-up and resolve differences. Fortunately, it's never too late to learn how to communicate better and repair your relationship—even if you're on the verge of splitting up. Marshall draws on thirty plus years working with over three thousand clients to give you his tried and test tool kit for a happy marriage. It includes: - The rules for constructive arguments. - How to be a better listener. - Use carrots rather than sticks. - How to forgive and move on.

The sleeper hit of Christmas 2009 - more than 4,000 copies sold through Bookscan. A book to send shivers down the spine of any parent who has spent years protecting their children from the slightest bump and bash. A glorious romp though some of the most reckless photos from the 1930s, 40s, 50s and 60s, tagged with side-splitting captions. Ah, the past. A time when children could play in the snow without a helmet, crampons and a risk assessment report. When footballs were made from rhino hide and cricket was played with one pad, if you were lucky. When I Were a Lad... looks at the glorious-yet-risky childhoods of yesteryear before the Health and Safety officers told us we couldn’t do everything because it was too dangerous. It reflects on a time when children were allowed in with the animals at London Zoo; a time before the car seatbelt was invented (let alone used); a time when you were allowed to dress up endangered species in goalkeeping kit and take penalties against them. The authors have trawled through the major historic archives to find some glorious photo opportunities where the safety angle of the participants was the last thing anyone thought of. Children perch happily on lethal, limb-mangling machinery, stand all-smiles on live crocodiles, feed brown bears with their hands and get scooped from the street by passing tram conductors! These truly were the days that Health and Safety forgot, back when I were a lad...

Now that communism has officially lost its ideological battle with capitalism it's time for the winners to rewrite history. In Eastern Europe, people are even beginning to look back at the communist era with a sense of nostalgia. 'The Thoughts of Chairman Miaow' takes the stark political sloganeering of Sino-Soviet communism and combines it with ickle-wickle pussycats. The book is comprised of a series of Chinese propaganda posters which have been cheekily subverted by the introduction of cute cats. 'To be attacked by the enemy is not a bad thing but a good thing,' said Mao, and his words are echoed throughout the book by a variety of Chairman Miaows. 'The Thoughts Of Chairman Miaow' neatly anthropomorphises the views of would-be feline dictators, with the text provided and inspired by a variety of die-hard apparatchiks at Politbureau HQ. Alongside exhortations to go out and destroy enemies of the state, there are appeals from the national intelligentsia; for unity; for freedom; for brotherhood; for social justice among the proletariat and (cat) calls to confront and defeat imperialist enemies. Long live Chairman Miaow!
