Dr. Susan Lawrence's Creating a Healing Society program pioneers the recognition of the devastating impact of human emotional pain and trauma as the root cause of societal and world problems. Without healthy support, traumatized people (unconsciously influenced by inner pain) engage in self-destructive or antisocial behaviors. We are accustomed to thinking about the impact of trauma on the individual, but rarely notice the dramatic effect that trauma has on our society. The cumulative result of these pain-driven behaviors can be seen in the epidemics of AIDS, Hepatitis C, drug addiction and alcoholism; in our violent and crime-ridden society; in unemployment, homelessness and poverty; in the ongoing cycle of child abuse and neglect; and, on an international level, in terrorism and war. In Creating a Healing Society, Dr. Lawrence describes her work with alcoholics, AIDS patients, prisoners, and others dying of what one of her clients calls the delayed effects of child abuse. Through concrete examples, she shows that people can turn their lives around, and by doing so, change the quality of our entire society.

This book is the fruit of lectures given during the symposium "Proteolytic Enzymes and Wound Healing" at the Joint Meet ing of the Wound Healing Society and the European Tissue Repair Society held in Amsterdam, August 22-25, 1993. Look ing back, we can conclude with satisfaction that the meeting was a great success, with regard to both the number of partici pants and the scientific level. Enormous progress is being made in the field of wound heal ing and tissue repair. It was therefore of prime importance that one fundamental aspect in the healing of chronic wound- the proteolytic debridement of tissue necrosis - be given thorough attention during the above-mentioned symposium. Renowned authors dealt with the various aspects of proteoly tic enzymes and wound healing, so that a unique overview was given. The lectures were written up and arranged into the various chapters of this book, which should provide the reader with a practical guide in understanding and treating necrotic wounds. Since the Reformation in the sixteenth century, Lutheran traditions have had a great impact on culture and politics in many societies. At the same time Lutheran churches have impacted personal faith, basic morality, and ethics. Modern society, however, is quite different from the time of the Reformation. How should we evaluate Lutheran tradition in today's Western multicultural and post-Christian society? Is it possible to develop a Lutheran theological position that can be regarded as reasonable in a society that evidences a considerable weakening of the role of Christianity? What are the challenges raised by cultural diversity for a Lutheran theology and ethics? Is it possible to develop a Lutheran identity in a multicultural society, and is there any fruitful Lutheran contribution to the coexistence of different religious and nonreligious traditions in the future?

Living with Animals

Within nineteenth-century Ojibwe/Chippewa medicine societies, and in communities at large, animals are realities and symbols that demonstrate cultural principles of North American Ojibwe nations. Living with Animals presents over 100 images from oral and written sources – including birch bark scrolls, rock art, stories, games, and dreams – in which animals appear as kindred beings, spirit powers, healers, and protectors. Michael Pomedli shows that the principles at play in these sources are not merely evidence of cultural values, but also unique standards brought to treaty signings by Ojibwe leaders. In addition, these principles are norms against which North American treaty interpretations should be reframed. The author provides an important foundation for ongoing treaty negotiations, and for what contemporary Ojibwe cultural figures corroborate as ways of leading a good, integrated life.
