Well before his entry into the religious life in the spring of 386 C.E., Augustine had embarked on a lengthy comparison between teachings on the self in the philosophical traditions of Platonism and Neoplatonism and the treatment of the topic in the Psalms, the letters of St. Paul, and other books of the Bible. Brian Stock argues that Augustine, over the course of these reflections, gradually abandoned a dualistic view of the self, in which the mind and the body play different roles, and developed the notion of an integrated self, in which the mind and body function interdependently. Stock identifies two intellectual techniques through which Augustine effected this change in his thought. One, lectio divina, was an early Christian approach to reading that engaged both mind and body. The other was a method of self-examination that consisted of framing an interior Socratic dialogue between Reason and the individual self. Stock investigates practices of writing, reading, and thinking across a range of premodern texts to demonstrate how Augustine builds upon the rhetorical traditions of Cicero and the inner dialogue of Plutarch to create an introspective and autobiographical version of self-study that had little to no precedent. The Integrated Self situates these texts in a broad historical framework while being carefully attuned to what they can tell us about the intersections of mind, body, and medicine in contemporary thought and practice. It is a book in which Stock continues his project of reading Augustine, and one in which he moves forward in new and perhaps unexpected directions.

Schizophrenia has long been regarded as the most important mental problem since the twentieth century. Apart from the biochemical and genetic models, there are many psychosocial theories including psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, phenomenological, existential, biochemical as well as social construction perspectives in explaining the cause and recovery of schizophrenia. Under the domination of biochemical and genetic models, the treatment, services and recovery work for clients with schizophrenia are undermined. Professionals may follow the recovery orientation and focus on hospitalisation as the sole concern in recovery and treatment. However in doing so, they fail to connect with the rich and solid foundation of related theories in schizophrenia in past centuries. In addition, the subjective experiences of people with schizophrenia are severely ignored and neglected by related parties. This book serves to bridge this theoretical gap by a profound revisit of different perspectives and concepts in self-fragmentation of persons with schizophrenia. Within phenomenological, psychodynamic, sociological and existential perspectives, clients with schizophrenia harbor an intense urge for an integrated self-system and ontological existence behind their fragmented psychotic experiences. Within the self-fragmentation and self-integration dilemma, three dynamic forces are identified. They are self-splitting versus self-cohesions, self-concealment versus self-visibility, and self-destruction versus self-preservation. This integration, when it occurs, can finally leas to a full mental health recovery. That includes three positive forces: self-cohesion, self-visibility and self-preservation, which enable the individual with schizophrenia to restore a normal integration system with a normal life and social functioning within an integrated and supportive community.

Two-thirds of the way through my thirty-eight year career as a Clinical Psychologist I felt the need to describe and understand exactly what I had been doing as I attempted to help counselees, and why I seemed to be successful. This self-analysis forced me to develop working definitions of life, consciousness, freewill, self-development, and self-transcendence, and led me to conclude that to be successful in psychotherapy counselees must be taught the effective use of consciousness. Sharing what I have learned is my way of thanking those thousands of counselees who have shared their lives with me and enabled me to learn about myself. During the last decade, sector wide crises in agriculture have rapidly followed each other, resulting in serious consumer concerns about the quality and safety of agri-food products. To prevent new crises, governments have developed quality regulations and retailers have introduced quality management standards. However, concerns have been raised about the administrative burdens placed on firms, because they must comply with many private and public quality regulations. Therefore, both government and firms strive for more integration and self regulation of quality management systems.By combining managerial and economic theory, this study builds a framework to demonstrate the impact of integrated quality management on self regulation and performance. Using empirical evidence from the poultry meat, the fruit and vegetable and the flower and potted plant chains, this study shows that integrated quality management systems positively affect performance and self regulation. However, it is necessary to find committed partners that share the firm's quality objectives. In most cases, too strict enforcement of quality requirements is destructive, initiates conflict and does not lead to higher performance. Furthermore, governmental agencies should focus on innovative approaches to assure quality. Not legislation, but factors such as media attention and corporate social responsibility enlarge the integration of quality management systems.This book is recommended for a broad audience of professionals, practitioners and policy makers who concern themselves with the design, management and assessment of quality management and self regulation in agri-food supply chains.

Self-Deception and the Common Life investigates the topic of self-deception from three points of view: philosophical psychology, ethics, and theology. Empirical evidence and an -ordinary language- analysis support the case that the linguistic expression 'self-deception' is literally meaningful and that the language of the common life can be trusted. Early in this century, most empirically oriented psychologists believed that all motivation was based in the physiology of a set of non-nervous system tissue needs. The theories of that era reflected this belief and used it in an attempt to explain an increasing number of phenomena. It was not until the 1950s that it became irrefutably clear that much of human motivation is based not in these drives, but rather in a set of innate psychological needs. Their physiological basis is less understood; and as concepts, these needs lend themselves more easily to psycho logical than to physiological theorizing. The convergence of evidence from a variety of scholarly efforts suggests that there are three such needs: self-determination, competence, and interpersonal relatedness. This book is primarily about self-determination and competence (with particular emphasis on the former), and about the processes and structures that relate to these needs. The need for interpersonal relat edness, while no less important, remains to be explored, and the findings from those explorations will need to be integrated with the present theory to develop a broad, organismic theory of human motivation. Thus far, we have articulated self-determination theory, which is offered as a working theory-a theory in the making. To stimulate the research that will allow it to evolve further, we have stated self-determination theory in the form of minitheories that relate to more circumscribed domains, and we have developed paradigms for testing predictions from the various minitheories.
