Excerpt from Annual Magazine Subject-Index, 1912: A Subject-Index to a Selected List of American and English Periodicals and Society Publications Not Elsewhere Indexed The magazine subject-index for 1912 is the fifth annual supplement to volume one which was compiled by the present editor in 1907 and covered many periodicals from their birth to December, 1907. Since this initial volume was issued certain changes have been made in the periodicals indexed, due first, to the regular mortality in the periodical field, and second, to the inclusion Of our titles in other gen eral indexes to periodical literature. Our rule has always been and will still remain no duplication. This index will always cover an entirely new field. Owing to the suspension of Poole's Index the unindexed field is larger this year than ever before. We have added many new titles to our list, and plans on foot will, we feel sure, result in many more Of the Poole sets being covered in the near future. History, Travel, Mountaineering, Exploration, Forestry, Outdoor life, The Fine Arts and Architecture are still our specialties and we aim to cover these subjects thoroughly. The general field is not neglected, however, and many valu able references Ou almost any subject are made available. Since our last record four Of our indexed periodicals have ceased publication: - A merican Catholic Historical Researches (july, Granite State Magazine (dec. North Dakota Magazine (aug. Recreation (july. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Annual Magazine Subject-Index, 1913: Including as Part II, the Dramatic Index, 1913 This series of Indexes was begun in 1907 by the present editor in response to a need expressed by many for an index to serials which were denied admission to any of the then existing general indexes to periodical literature. We still, as hitherto, omit fiction, except continued stories, or stories by well-known authors. We specialize in some fields, such as History, Travel, Mountaineering, Exploration, Outdoor Life, F ine Arts, and Architecture, but this index now becomes more general in scope than before. This year we index 144 titles, and owing to the suspension of Poole's Index have taken up several more of the magazines and reviews that were for merly therein included, but now, since 1910, neglected. Excerpt from Annual Magazine Subject-Index, 1910: Including as Part II, the Dramatic Index, 1910 Of the magazines indexed in 1909, two do not appear in the 1910 issue: Bibliophile, London, which ceased publication in Sept., 1909, and Hampton's Magazine (formerly Broadway Magazine) which has been included in one of the other general indexes to periodicals, and therefore must be dropped according to our rule of non-duplication. Of new names we have two to record. American Forestry, which in 1909 was published as Conservation, became known under its present title in Jan., 1910. The Bulletin of the International Bureau of American Republics, which from Apr., 1909, to Jan., 1910, was called Bulletin of the International Union of American Republics, changed with the Oct., 1910, issue to Bulletin of the Pan American Union. During the present year the African Monthly suspended publication (with the Feb. Issue) though it has been announced that it may soon be resumed under new management. Van Norden Magazine ended its short career in March, 1910, having started life as a financial periodical and developed into an illustrated world-review. Of the periodicals we have been indexing no issues have appeared during 1910 of Florida Historical Society Quarterly; M azama Missouri Historical Society, Collections; United States Catholic Historical Society, Records; and Washington Historical Quarterly. Granite State Magazine has issued nothing since May, 1910, while Kindergarten Primary Magazine began in Sept., 1910, as vol. 24, no. 1 although no vol. 23 had been issued. It discovered its error in Jan., 1911, so in this index Sept. To Dec. Are referred to as vol. 23. The general plan and scope of the Index have been kept unchanged. Articles are entered under the subject - not by author or by title unless the title describes the subject. His tory, especially local United States history, is still the largest single subject covered. Thus references under Revolution; Civil War; Indians, as well as under the names of States and cities, and notable men and women, are most numerous. Forestry, Exploration, Architecture, Art, are well represented, and references will also be found to almost any subject. It should be noted here that all articles on the drama, theatres, and actors have been transferred to the Dramatic Index issued in connection with this volume. Excerpt from Annual Magazine Subject-Index, 1911: Including as Part II, the Dramatic Index The plan of the magazine subject-index remains the same this year as in the previous volumes. Briefly, it is to furnish a subject-index to the contents of the periodicals most needed by libraries, but which are not indexed in any other general index. Thus, as from its first issue, this index opens to the student an entirely new field of research. Fiction is omitted, except novels, and stories by prominent writers, which are entered under name of author. Excerpt from Annual Magazine Subject-Index, 1921: A Subject-Index to a Selected List of American and English Periodicals and Society Publications Over one hundred and fifty periodicals are here indexed by subject, and a broad field is thus made accessible, as but few of these periodicals are covered by any other general index. American local history is our most important field, as all the State Historical Society periodicals and Collections are included. Art, Architecture, Forestry, Mountaineering, Exploration, Travel and Out-door life are also strong features. Certain Canadian and English periodicals are included. Excerpt from Annual Magazine Subject Index, 1920: Including as Part II the Dramatic Index, 1920 Yet this index is also a general one, with especial attention given to Art, Architecture, Travel, Mountaineering and Out door life. Since our last issue The Magazine of History has issued one number nov.-dec. 1917, published in September, 1920. Annals of Iowa, having lain dormant since 1915, is again show ing signs of life. The New York State Historical Association has issued a Quarterly Journal, vol. 1, No. 1, being October, 1919. As Library Journal and Public Libraries are now indexed in the Readers' Guide, we omit them, but have added new this year Library, London, and The Library Association Record. New and notable periodicals are included in this volume from their first issue to the end of 1920, namely - Canadian Bookman, Canadian Historical Review, London Mercury, Print Connoisseur. The late appearance of this volume is this year caused by printing strike, and binders' strike. We hope next year to get back to normal times once more. Excerpt from Annual Magazine Subject-Index, 1917: Including as Part II, the Dramatic Index, 1917 Herein is given the key to all subjects treated in many peri odicals and Society Transactions not elsewhere indexed. For the eleventh year this index appears, general in scope, yet spe cializing in History, Travel, Mountaineering, Exploration, Outdoor Life, Fine Arts and Architecture. Its use should be as a complementary volume to The Readers' Guide. It will be found a very full index to History, Art, Geography and Travel. The inclusion of many Canadian and English periodicals will be found a valuable feature of this index. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
