Music research has entered something of a Golden Age. Technological advances and scholarly inquiry have merged in interdisciplinary studies—drawing on psychology, neuroscience, evolutionary biology, anthropology and other fields—that illuminate the musical nature of our species. This volume develops, supports and challenges that body of research, examining key issues in the field, such as the difficulty of writing about music, the formation of musical preferences, the emotional impact of musical sounds, the comparison of music and language, the impulse for making music and the connection between music and spirituality.

When he was 16 he inveigled his way into a maximum security hotel to hang out with the Rolling Stones. From that day on, Richard Clapton knew he was going to be a rock star. It's now almost 50 years since that fateful day - years filled with a lifetime of incredible experiences, outrageous good times and a catalogue of iconic and timeless songs. Through the glory years of rock & roll, in cities as varied as London, Berlin, Sydney, Los Angeles and Paris, Richard forged his own career and built up a significant body of work whilst living, loving and partying with the biggest names in the Australian and international music world. By his own frank admission, these were years fuelled by prodigious quantities of alcohol and drugs, set against a backdrop of constant recording and touring, of endless bacchanalian partying and wild sex. It was to be a dark and dangerous journey to the very outer limits of human behavior and physical endurance, a rollercoaster ride of extraordinary euphoric highs and deep, shattering lows. Dozens of Richard's friends died on that journey or fell off the path. Miraculously, he survived to tell the tale AND he remembers everything! For 40 years, Richard Clapton has been, above all else, a songwriter - a wry observer of human behavior and an astute commentator on the Australian condition. His best songs - Deep Water, Best Years of Our Lives, Goodbye Tiger, Glory Road, Lucky Country, Girls on the Avenue, Trust Somebody, Capricorn Dancer - capture the essence of this country like few other writers. In The Best Years of My Life, Richard employs his keen songwriter's powers of observation, portraiture and storytelling to tell the best one of all: the extraordinary story of his own life. Outrageous, funny, insightful and poignant, this is the rock memoir to beat them all. Welcome to the party that never ends...

Rula and I were married in 1959. Periodically, during the course of our lives together, I composed music for us as a couple, as well for family situations and events such as weddings and funerals. Rula insisted that I write it all down, pointing out that musical expression opens a window on the soul, while cameras only reflect outward appearances. She created a collage to serve as a cover page for each piece that I wrote down. Recently, as I pondered the lineup of songs and solos we had recorded over the years, it dawned on me that we had at least partially filled the melodic hiatus in the outward soundtrack of our own lives. Even mediocre movies are accompanied by background music, which gives audible expression to what the protagonists are experiencing in their souls. Often I had remarked upon exiting a performance empowered by a musical score, that the lives of ordinary people are anything but ordinary, and that all deserve to be accompanied in their daily lives by the New York Philharmonic. JUST IMAGINE THE LIFT THAT SUCH A BACKUP WOULD LEND TO ONE'S SELF-ESTEEM -- AND THE IMPETUS FOR BEAUTY TO DISPLACE UGLINESS! The chapters of this book discuss the setting or motivation which lead me to express its essence in music. The sheet music itself then rounds out the chapter. The author is not a professional musician, but has hopefully recorded in each case enough for others to perform and expand upon.
