After training in secret with his mother's sister, the magical Lady Taleissa, Prince Kaidan returns home to find his kingdom destroyed and his parents, King Gorlan and Queen Olwen, gone. With the monarchy overthrown, Kaidan is set adrift in a lawless land where his birthright is no longer recognized. To make matters worse, there's a price on his head set by the warlord who wants to ensure that the royal line has no chance to return. Kaidan seeks refuge with a merry band of outlaws hiding in the forest, who were neither loyal to the monarchy nor to the current leadership. Kaidan joins them until they betray him, selling him out to a local merchant and giving the money to the poor. Now a captive, Kaidan prepares to be exchanged for the reward money until his outlaw friends reveal their plan to rescue him. Kaidan then discovers that the King was indeed killed but his mother is most likely alive, though imprisoned by the warlord. Kaidan's rescuers offer him a new home among them. He's tempted, but with his mother still missing, he realizes that his aunt, the Lady Taleissa, must be searching for her. Kaidan resolves to find them both and set things right even if being King is no longer a reality.

An homage to such literary classics such as 'Alice in Wonderland' and 'The Wizard of Oz, ' 'The Orphan King' is a dark fairy tale about a ten year old orphan boy named Lewis who, after ten long years of abuse inflicted upon him by both his fellow orphans as well as by that of the orphanage's head mistress, discovers that he is meant for something more. Lewis learns that ten years ago, on the very day of his birth, he was brought to the realm of Earth from a land called Elysium to hide him from his evil sister, Princess Ravana, who, in an attempt to seize the throne of Elysium, killed his parents and tried to kill him, being that as the first born male he was now next in line for the throne, taking away any chance Ravana held at becoming Queen. But then it was, when the Princess killed his parents and forced him to flee to the Earth realm, that there was nothing to stop her from taking the throne; a throne that was rightfully his. Now, with the help of his royal guardian and a few friends they meet along the way, Lewis travels back to the land of Elysium to challenge his sister's rule and restore the once beautiful and peaceful kingdom back to its former glory.

The Orphan: A Journey to Wholeness addresses loneliness and the feeling of being alone in the world, two distinct characteristics that mark the life of an orphan. Regardless if we have grown up with or without parents, we are all too likely to meet such experiences in ourselves and in our daily encounters with others. With numerous case examples, Dr. Punnett describes how loneliness and the feeling of being alone tend to be repeated in later relationships and may eventually lead to states of anxiety and depression. The main purpose of this book is not to just stay within the context of the literal orphan, but also to explore its symbolic dimensions in order to provide meaning to the diverse experiences of feeling alone in the world. In accepting the orphan within, we begin to take responsibility for our own unique life journey, a privileged journey in which one can at some point in time say with pride, I am an orphan.

Aquaman meets Mistborn. When the moons rise over the endless seas of Nix, they bring only destruction. The three moons, Tethis, Arathis, and Mathis, hold the ocean world under their sway, imbalanced by their erratic orbits. Immense waves called Moontides follow in their wake, washing any attempt at civilization away. And somewhere amid all of this chaos, an orphan named Aust manages to survive by his wits and the help of a sloppy Dredge Eel named Funk. Some call him the Orphan King for he protects and watches over other children abandoned upon the floating village of the Barges. But his ability to do so is about to be tested to the limits, and it will take everything he has and more to live up to his duty. A Moontide like no other is coming, and the world of Nix will never be the same. As a world of water, change is inevitable. But not even the legendary Guardians of the Tide will be able to protect them when moonrise comes. Aust the Orphan King will be summoned by the tides and the waves of fate to be more than he ever thought possible, but only if he can heed Moonrise's Call and unlock the secrets inside.

A Book of Wonders for Grown-Up Readers Every once in a great while a book comes along that reminds us of the magic spell that stories can cast over us–to dazzle, entertain, and enlighten. Welcome to the Arabian Nights for our time–a lush and fantastical epic guaranteed to spirit you away from the very first page . . . Secreted away in a garden, a lonely girl spins stories to warm a curious prince: peculiar feats and unspeakable fates that loop through each other and back again to meet in the tapestry of her voice. Inked on her eyelids, each twisting, tattooed tale is a piece in the puzzle of the girl’s own hidden history. And what tales she tells! Tales of shape-shifting witches and wild horsewomen, heron kings and beast princesses, snake gods, dog monks, and living stars–each story more strange and fantastic than the one that came before. From ill-tempered “mermaid” to fastidious Beast, nothing is ever quite what it seems in these ever-shifting tales–even, and especially, their teller. Adorned with illustrations by the legendary Michael Kaluta, Valente’s enchanting lyrical fantasy offers a breathtaking reinvention of the untold myths and dark fairy tales that shape our dreams. And just when you think you’ve come to the end, you realize the adventure has only begun…. Praise for In the Night Garden “Cathrynne Valente weaves layer upon layer of marvels in her debut novel. In the Night Garden is a treat for all who love puzzle stories and the mystical language of talespinners.”—Carol Berg, author of Daughter of Ancients “Fabulous talespinning in the tradition of story cycles such as The Arabian Nights. Lyrical, wildly imaginative and slyly humorous, Valente's prose possesses an irrepressible spirit.”—K. J. Bishop, author of The Etched City “Astonishing work! Valente’s endless invention and mythic range are breathtaking. It’s as if she’s gone night-wandering, and plucked a hundred distant cultures out of the air to deliver their stories to us.”—Ellen Kushner, author of Thomas the Rhymer “Refreshingly original in both style and form, In the Night Garden should delight lovers of myth and folklore.”—Juliet Marillier, author of the Sevenwaters trilogy
