A powerful and inspiring examination of the connection between the potential for great talent and conditions commonly thought to be “disabilities,” revealing how the source of our struggles can be the origin of our greatest strengths. In The Power of Different, psychiatrist and bestselling author Gail Saltz examines the latest scientific discoveries, profiles famous geniuses who have been diagnosed with all manner of brain “problems”—including learning disabilities, ADD, anxiety, Depression, Bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and Autism—and tells the stories of lay individuals to demonstrate how specific deficits in certain areas of the brain are directly associated with the potential for great talent. Saltz shows how the very conditions that cause people to experience difficulty at school, in social situations, at home, or at work, are inextricably bound to creative, disciplinary, artistic, empathetic, and cognitive abilities. In this pioneering work, readers will find engaging scientific research and stories from historical geniuses and everyday individuals who have not only made the most of their conditions, but who have flourished because of them. They are leaning into their brain differences to: *Identify areas of interest and expertise *Develop work arounds *Create the environments that best foster their talents *Forge rewarding interpersonal relationships Enlightening and inspiring, The Power of Different proves that the unique wiring of every brain can be a source of strength and productivity, and contributes to the richness of our world.

This volume analyzes the work of a racially, ethnically, and geographically diverse group of recent social poets. These figures -- Thylias Moss, John Yau, Denise Duchamel, Carolyn Forche, Joseph Lease, Gloria Anzaldua, Martin Espada, Melvin Dixon, and Stephen Paul Miller -- utilize a diversity of aesthetic strategies to address a number of central problems, such as poetic speculations about dangers and opportunities of visual representations by dominant and marginalized groups, effacement of specific communities' histories, and attempts at restoration of history.

With this inspiring and brightly illustrated guide to power, learn about the different types of power, what it means to have power, and what you can do with your own power to create positive change in the world, no matter who or how old you are. What makes you the boss of me? What makes a king a king, or a queen a queen? Why can some people vote for their leaders, but other people can't? Does having lots of money make you powerful? Why are there fewer female scientists, leaders, and artists than men in history books? These are things that kids wonder about. The Power Book answers these and other questions in a relatable way for young people, including thought-provoking discussions on challenging topics, like war, bullying, racism, sexism, and homophobia. You will gain an understanding of your place in your family, your school, and the world, and will discover ways in which you can use your own power to shape the future. As you explore the many aspects of power, thinking points pose questions that spark self-reflection and quotes and stories from some of the greatest change-makers--such as Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., Emmeline Pankhurst, Rosa Parks, Malala Yousafzai, and Stephen Hawking--provide historical context and inspiration. Find more opportunities for learning at the back with a glossary of terms and suggestions for further reading. Gain a greater understanding of how power works, then learn how to harness it for good with The Power Book.

Country Joe and Me is about a rock-folk icon and a San Francisco public school teacher. A long time ago Country Joe McDonald and his Navy pal Ron Cabral had an idea to write a book about the story of their lives. They met in 1960 while serving in the U.S. Navy as 18-year old sailors at Atsugi, Japan. Follow their interactions over several decades a roller coaster ride of shared experiences in the military, education and music. Told by Cabral from the perspective of "ground zero" it offers a unique look at the emergence of Country Joe and the cultural, political, and musical revolution that blossomed in San Francisco and Berkeley during the late 60's and early 70's-- There are chapters on Country Joe and The Fish, Janis Joplin and Joe's brief love affair with her. Go behind the scenes with Bill Graham and Jerry Garcia during "Summerland" - a very special project for high school students initiated by Country Joe while he was a volunteer teacher in Ron's school called Opportunity High. Also included are the lyrics to some of Country Joe's most important songs, memorabilia, rare photos, a discography and a lot more-- There is a special Afterword by Country Joe on his role with the Vietnam Vets over the years. A must read for every Country Joe fan. This is the only book currently available on Country Joe. For more information on Country Joe see www.countryjoe.com.
