THE SALT & PEPPER GANG centers on the friendship of two boys, one white and one black, both sent to Cal Farley's Boys Ranch in the early 1970s, where 400 boys lived and grew their own food, rode steers and bulls and broncs in the rodeo and went on cattle drives. My theme centers on the "Fortunate Fall," the idea that a happier outcome sometimes results from an unfortunate event.

It was the very beginning of Valentine's Day, 1972. Valentine's Day had been a disaster for me the last two years... I guess all of that was nothing compared to the blood-soaked minutes just past. I felt nauseated, but there was too much to do. Our window of opportunity was shorter than even the pessimistic thirty minutes we had previously estimated. It was down to the speed we were capable of going right this minute. Toby and Consuelo had no doubt turned in the alarm. I made a mental note to reload my shotgun at the first opportunity."Like the odds, Dex?""Shit, man... I was just goin' fishin' when these bastards decided to turn me into a savage once again. They get what they deserve, but they'll never take me alive."I reached out in the dark and patted him on the shoulder. He had said it all.

I guess I knew now how awful Chicken Little must have felt. All sorts of things were just not right... very close to me... on the other side of the island. Yet Cassell would have to do his punishment first... So the politicians would feel better. Yeah... midnight had come and gone, we were on our own now, but nobody seemed to be wearing a watch.

Soon they all join in, robbing banks on their way to work. The Atlanta press dubs them The Morning Glory Gang, and what begins as an act of desperation becomes a high stakes game as the robberies become more frequent and more violent. In the summer of 1963, most people in West Chester, Pennsylvania, are celebrating with Hula-Hoops, Dairy Queen treats, and fireworks. Kofi Roundtree and his cousins are chasing after fireflies in the dark, hoping to gain a magic wish. Kofi and his family are very poor, so wishes are the refuge that leads to dreams. Unusual events begin to suggest that Kofi, a boy of deep faith and imagination, may have some of his wishes granted. Some of the granted wishes seem to emerge from coincidence and happenstance, some of them involve the loving involvement of family members, and some can only be linked to a benevolent, unseen force. What happens to this poor boy from the rural meadows of Pennsylvania to change his life forever?

It is three days before Christmas, and two young girls have disappeared from the local academy. This hasn’t happened for fifteen years, since Rouge Kendall’s twin sister was murdered. The killer was found, but now Rouge, twenty-five and a policeman, is forced to wonder: Was he really the one? Also wondering is a former classmate named Ali Cray, a forensic psychologist with scars of her own. The pattern is the same, she says: a child called out to meet a friend. The friend is the bait, the Judas child, and is quickly killed. But the primary victim lives longer...until Christmas Day. Rouge doesn’t want to hear this. He’s spent the last fifteen years trying to avoid the memories: drinking alone, lying low, washing out of school and a promising first career. Now he might abandon law enforcement too—but something won’t let him, not yet. A little girl has haunted his dreams all these years—and he has three days finally to put her to rest.

Phillip Thompson had kept a journal for years, from the time he was in college in the 1980s at the University of Mississippi until he attended the Artillery Officers' Advanced Course, when the demands of school interrupted. His desire to keep track of the events in his life was re-ignited with the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, his impending deployment to the Persian Gulf in August 1990, and the beginning of Operation Desert Shield. While in the Persian Gulf, Thompson kept a small green, military-issue notebook with him at all times, writing down everything he could, drawing maps, explaining his emotions, and oftentimes, venting his anger. Upon his return from Saudi Arabia in 1991, he had filled three notebooks, which evolved into this work. Here are Thompson's personal experiences and his observations of those around him in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
