Biblical symbols were designed by God and by his people Israel to emphasize divine truths and to call believers to remembrance of responsibilities to worship and honor their Creator. Unfortunately, most Christians have been robbed of this insight by the historical church's separation from the Jewish people. Restoring Christianity's Hebraic foundations is essential for equipping believers with enriched understanding of the roots of their faith. Recognizing the historical and spiritual truths represented by the symbols of the Hebrew Scriptures is a profound means of underscoring the truth of Christianity's Jewish connection. Living Emblems: Ancient Symbols of Faith presents these vivid images of a rich biblically Hebraic tradition: The Shofar: A Trumpet in Zion; The Menorah: God's Lamp, Man's Light; The Mezuzah: A Sign at the Door; The Kiddush Cup: The Cup of Blessing. You'll be enriched as Living Emblems deeps your understanding of Jesus by revealing profound truths about his life and ministry through the powerful images reflected in the ancient symbols of biblical faith.

The screaming continued. It barraged his ears, the loudest, most horrifying noise he could ever remember hearing. A shower of electrical sparks rained down on him from the garage door opener, but it stubbornly remained wide open. Then a break in the bullets, the weapons fire, the explosions of drywall dust.

The Spring Feasts rehearse the Engagement and the Fall Feast are a rehearsal of the Wedding. We should approach our celebration of these Moedim from that standpoint. If we do, not only will we please Yahuah, but we will mature from the milk of the Word to the meat of it. In the process, we will fulfill “the letter” and properly prepare ourselves as the Bride; and have our candles lit when Yahusha returns to receive us unto himself. We read in 1 Corinthians 2:7 that Sha’ul mention “predestined before the ages to our glory”! We are going to go back to the very beginning, before the Feasts of Yahuah were given orally to Adam and before they were written down in detailed instructions in The Mosaic Covenant. Why? Because now, in The Yahushaic Covenant, they have found their ultimate meaning Spiritually; meaning which was ordained before the foundation of the world and predestined before the ages, as Sha’ul stated.

The Shofar

In The Shofar, Jeremy Montagu offers a detailed study of the ram’s horn of the Bible, describing its history and use—both ritual and secular—from biblical times to the present. Because the same person normally blows the shofar each year during the Jewish High Holy Days, few are aware of the wide differences among communities around the world: the varying points in the Jewish liturgical service when the shofar is blown, what sound combinations exist, and the many varieties of the instrument. This is the first work of its kind to detail the full range of historical, musical, antiquarian, and religious issues surrounding the ancient instrument with all relevant citations from the Bible, the Talmud, and key post-Talmudic sources. Jeremy Montagu carefully examines horn types, sound characteristics, liturgical uses, and community functions to illustrate how the shofar has reflected local custom, regional needs, and religious practice. Chapters provide difficult-to-find information on how shofars are made; advice on how to choose, prepare, and maintain shofars; and instructions for aspiring blowers on a variety of traditions. With more than sixty photographs from the author’s personal collection, this is an ideal work for Jews and Christians, religious scholars and musicologists, and even practicing musicians seeking to understand the crucial role of this instrument in the life of a people.

Divine Mysteries

We Evangelicals struggle with mysteries. Answers are sought, meanings defined, and theology put in nice, neat boxes for clarification, or simply to justify our denominational notions. As Augustine notes, we are talking about God, after all. Why is it surprising that we do not understand? If we did understand, then it would not be God. Mysteries remind us that God is bigger than our preconceived ideas about his involvement with those created in his image. Divine Mysteries: Concise and Thoughtful Ancient Biblical Wisdom addresses some of these mysteries in a provocative and succinct manner.

The Mishnah, or compilation of oral laws made at the close of the second century A.D., ranks second only to the Hebrew Scriptures as a Jewish national-religious creation and possession, and for sixteen centuries has been an essential ingredient in the education of orthodox Jews, and an object of devotional study through life. The "Mishnah," understood to be the written form of the Jewish Oral Law, was preserved by the rabbis following the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple in 70 CE, and was completed in approximately 200 CE. More than four centuries of Jewish religious thought and activity are found within this text, and it is as important to the development of Judaism as the New Testament is to the development of Christianity. Students of the New Testament will find it especially interesting because its contents reflect the Jewish religious tradition during the time of Jesus and the early Christian Church. The "Mishnah" historical value in understanding the first two centuries of the common era is comparable in its importance to the Dead Sea Scrolls, as well as the Apocrypha, Pseudepigrapha, and secular works of that time such as the writings of Josephus. This edition by Danby is the classic English translation of the "Mishnah" (which was originally written in Middle or "Mishnaic" Hebrew), and has been the standard for almost 80 years for scholars and other interested readers. Until the printing of this volume in the 1930s, the "Mishnah" was not available to study as a whole for the English speaker. Now it is available for the first time in a paperback edition.

For five decades prior to his death in 1993, Rabbi Joseph Dov Soloveitchik was the unchallenged leader of modern Orthodox Judaism in the United States. His understanding of both traditional Judaism and secular philosophy shaped two generations of rabbinic students at Yeshiva University, and charted a new course for American Orthodox Jews. In On Repentance, noted scholar Pinchas Peli has gathered the major points of Rabbi Soloveitchik's teachings on teshuvah (repentance), based on the annual series of lectures on the theme of teshuvah, presented on the anniversary of his father's death. For many Jews, these lectures were the major academic and intellectual event of the year. Outside of his followers however, few were able to experience the genius of Rabbi Soloveitchik. He gave his lectures in Yiddish, and generally refused to publish. Now readers can experience the brilliant thinking of this great teacher and sage.

Rabbi Jay Rosenbaum is devoted to his congregation of mostly middle- and upper-middle-class Conservative Jews -- yet their lax observance frustrates and saddens him. Competing daily with an increasingly secular culture, Rosenbaum struggles to show his congregation the riches and fulfillment of an observant Jewish life. Exploring the rabbi's sometimes troubled, sometimes joyful leadership, And They Shall Be My People presents a complex and human portrait of American Judaism in our modern age. "A striking and valuable book.... A powerful, haunting story for a society easily seduced by new emphases and values." -- Gerald I. Wolpe, The Philadelphia Inquirer; "To call this 'a revealing portrait' is an understatement. It is a mirror of organized Jewish life." -- Robert L. Wolkoff, The Plain Dealer (Cleveland)
