As a professional travel writer and editor for the past 40 years, Don George has been paid to explore the world. Through the decades, his articles have been published in magazines, newspapers, and websites around the globe and have won more awards than almost any other travel writer alive, yet his pieces have never been collected into one volume. The Way of Wanderlust: The Best Travel Writing of Don George fills this void with a moving and inspiring collection of tales and reflections from one of America’s most acclaimed and beloved travel writers. From his high-spirited account of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro on a whim when he was 22 years old to his heart-plucking description of a home-stay in a muddy compound in Cambodia as a 61-year-old, this collection ranges widely. As renowned for his insightful observations as for his poetic prose, George always absorbs the essence of the places he’s visiting. Other stories here include a moving encounter with Australia’s sacred red rock monolith, Uluru; an immersion in country kindness on the Japanese island of Shikoku; the trials and triumphs of ascending Yosemite’s Half Dome with his wife and children; and a magical morning at Machu Picchu.

As a psychologist who has worked with a variety of populations throughout America, I understand the universality of depression, anxiety, and pain. Additionally I admit I have burned out in serving the multitude of populations and being emotional caretaker to my family and loved ones. During this time period I worked with active duty marines and sailors, while living in Hawaii. The Fragrance of Wanderlust is a self help book that focuses on 40 tips one can do to live life as a tourist in their hometown. This self help book explores how living life as a tourist in your own backyard can be as effective as any daily meditation. The Fragrance of Wanderlust serves as a mindfulness project that I prescribed myself, and encourage others to replicate. Each day focuses on a day's theme on how one can live life through the eyes of a tourist. The beginning of the sections begin with a travel quote and ends with reflective questions or homework assignments for readers to engage in their own journey throughout the 40 days.

Wanderlust: A Book Club Sampler from Simon & Schuster is your boarding pass to the beautiful, the mysterious, and the unknown. This book club sampler was created to pay homage to a book’s unique ability to transport your imagination around the world, taking you on journeys across distance and time. Whether you’re in the mood for a historical love story set on a sheep station in rural Australia or an illuminating memoir of life in the war-torn Middle East, these are books you and your reading group won’t want to miss: Day of Honey: A Memoir of Food, Love, and War by Annia Ciezadlo, Wildflower Hill by Kimberley Freeman, The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman, Amaryllis in Blueberry by Christina Meldrum, The Hundred-Foot Journey by Richard C. Morais, The Distant Hours by Kate Morton, This Burns My Heart by Samuel Park, An Atlas of Impossible Longing by Anuradha Roy. Each excerpt in Wanderlust is accompanied by a collection of bonus materials intended to enrich your reading experience, including discussion questions, suggestions for enhancing your book club meeting, and author interviews. In the spirit of looking to the horizon, we also asked each author featured in this sampler one question: “What is your favorite travel memory?” Their answers are fittingly diverse—from Christina Meldrum’s summers spent at a family cottage in Lake Margrethe, Michigan, to Alice Hoffman’s inspirational first trip to Masada, the setting of her epic new novel The Dovekeepers. Anuradha Roy, the author of An Atlas of Impossible Longing, describes the lure of armchair travel best: “All readers…carry within themselves sediments of the places they have traveled to in books, the people they’ve met on the way. Therefore the strange déjà vu is when you land in a foreign country and wonder if you’ve been there before.” So, sit back, relax, and get ready for the trip of a lifetime. Bon Voyage!

A DAY BY DAY CHRONICLE OF A YOUNG MAN'S ADVENTURE AND AN OLD MAN'S MEMORY ... As a child, Jerry Shilan(ski) discovered that he suffered from an incurable disease. Before he was six years old, he knew he had a real need to find out what was on the other side of the hill, - and around every bend. He also wanted to know who put it there - and why. Someone told him he had a bad case of WANDERLUST, and the only way to cure it was to travel. Fate turned him onto Richard Halliburton books and National Geographic Magazines. As soon he was able, he took to the road on a life long journey to see as much of the world as possible. The first leg of this 78 year old's trek was a solo fifteen day hitch-hiking trip across the continent to the 1962 Seattle World's Fair. It was the defining experience of his life and in these pages he recounts the sights that he saw and the people he met on this extraordinary adventure that set the tone for a lifetime of Wandering and Wondering about the world. This book, fifty years in the making, is part memoir, part travelogue, and part geography and history lesson. Poignant profiles of the people he encountered along the way move the story through ten states and nearly 3,000 miles. The book is also sprinkled with trivia, recollections, reflections, philosophical musing, and self analyzation. Dialogue between the author and his traveling companions is often amusing and enlightening. WANDERLUST is an uplifting snap shot of life as it was fifty plus years ago and how traveling and meeting an array of people propelled a young man into a life well lived. ... "I spent $24 on the necessities of life, $25 on colored film, and the longest I waited for a ride was one hour and five minutes. It was a different time" - Jerry Shilan(ski)
