Weird Fiction fiction utilises elements of horror, science fiction and fantasy to showcase the impotence and insignificance of human beings within a much larger universe populated by often malign powers and forces that greatly exceed the human capacities to understand or control them. The critic August Nemo has selected seven classic tales of the genre, especially for readers who want (and have courage!) to face the abyss: - The Dunwich Horror by H.P. Lovecraft - Hell Screen by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa - An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge by Ambrose Bierce - The White People by Arthur Machen - Number 13 by M. R. James - The Derelict by William Hope Hodgson - The Repairer of Reputations by Robert W. Chambers

The House on the Borderland is a supernatural horror novel by William Hope Hodgson. He went beyond the existing ghost story and gothic molds, synthesizing a new cosmic horror that made a huge impact on later writers of weird tales, notably H. P. Lovecraft. The two gentlemen Tonnison and Berreggnog head to a village in Ireland for a week's fishing. There they discover the ruins of a strange house and the diary of the house's former occupant, the words on its torn pages hinting at an evil far beyond anything that has existed in this world before.

This book explores how nineteenth-century science stimulated the emergence of weird tales at the fin de siècle, and examines weird fiction by British writers who preceded and influenced H. P. Lovecraft, the most famous author of weird fiction. From laboratory experiments, thermodynamics, and Darwinian evolutionary theory to psychology, Theosophy, and the ‘new’ physics of atoms and forces, science illuminated supernatural realms with rational theories and practices. Changing scientific philosophies and questioning of traditional positivism produced new ways of knowing the world—fertile borderlands for fictional as well as real-world scientists to explore. Reading Robert Louis Stevenson’s Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886) as an inaugural weird tale, the author goes on to analyse stories by Arthur Machen, Edith Nesbit, H. G. Wells, William Hope Hodgson, E. and H. Heron, and Algernon Blackwood to show how this radical fantasy mode can be scientific, and how sciences themselves were often already weird.

As well as four classic fantasy novels and a series of "occult detective” stories, William Hope Hodgson (1877-1918) produced a large number of sea-faring tales, many of them steeped in elements of supernatural terror.Hodgson's vividly drawn descriptions of revulsive oceanic entities often pre-echo Lovecraft in their evocation of squamous, deep-six deliria, while the latter also acknowledged Hodgson's masterful evocations of elemental disquiet and disorder.HORRORS FROM HAUNTED SEAS not only collects all of Hodgson's acclaimed "Sargasso Sea” tales - From The Tideless Sea, The Mystery Of The Derelict, The Thing In The Weeds, The Finding Of The Graiken, and The Voice In The Dawn - but also presents a further 15 stories and episodes of nautical mystery and horror, including A Tropical Horror, The Voice In The Night, Out Of The Storm, The Stone Ship, Demons Of The Sea, The Albatross, and numerous others. The stories are reproduced in chronological order according to year of publication, making this perhaps the definitive edition of William Hope Hodgson's weird oceanic tales. The Voice In The Night was famously filmed in 1963 by Japanese director Ishirô Honda, under the title Matango (aka Attack Of The Mushroom People).

One of the leading names in classic weird fiction, William Hope Hodgson remains an influential and powerful storyteller, remembered chiefly for his nautical horror stories and for his occult detective, Carnacki the Ghost-finder. Hodgson's career - cut off prematurely in World War One - was extensive and elaborate, and this book contains the cream of the crop: the Sargasso Sea Mythos, a broad selection of his best maritime horror stories, printings of his lesser known strange tales (including The Baumoff Explosive and The Goddess of Death), five of the most striking Carnacki cases, and excerpts from two of his elaborate supernatural novels. Illustrated and annotated, these stories include episodes of fantasy, science fiction, horror, and mystery: floating stone ships, derelicts teeming with man-eating rats, ghost pirates, mutant weed men, carnivorous trees, parasitic fungi, were-sharks (you read that right), a ship with a heartbeat, a cursed room that whistles in the night, a castaway who refuses to let his hideous face be seen, freakish mutations, deadly ghost ships, bloodthirsty octopi, demonic hogs, and more. Hodgson's fiction reveals a level of anguished vulnerability that blends the cynical realism with fantastic romanticism, creating a borderland - a liminal doorway - that brings the anxieties of the every-day into contact with the fantasias of the nightmarish. The landscapes of his fiction - the weed-choked Sargasso Sea, the steaming South Pacific, Irish manor houses, derelict ghost ships - act as borderlands whereby these uncomfortable thoughts and existential pangs can enter into our world - to haunt and infect it. The illustrated, annotated stories included in this unique anthology - stories of fantasy, science fiction, horror, and mystery - are among Hodgson's best and will not fail to disturb, amuse, and inhabit your imagination.TALES INCLUDED in this ANNOTATED EDITION:The Grey Seas are Dreaming of My Death | The "Shamraken" Homeward-Bounder | Out of the Storm | From the Tideless Sea | Further News from the "Homebird" | The Thing in the Weeds | The Finding of the "Graiken" | A Tropical Horror | The Mystery of the Derelict | The Derelict | The Stone Ship | Demons of the Sea | The Haunted "Pampero" | Excerpts: The Boats of the Glenn Carrig | Excerpts: The Ghost Pirates | The Voice in the Night | The Baumoff Explosive | The Goddess of Death | The Valley of Lost Children | The Terror of the Water Tank | The Gateway of the Monster | The Horse of the Invisible | The Searcher of the End House | The Whistling Room | The Hog
