Though he did not live long enough to write his memoirs, John Fitzgerald Kennedy left behind a legacy of wit and wisdom that still informs the lives and hopes of the American people today. Known for his courage and charisma, he embodied the youthful, optimistic spirit of the mid-20th century American. Yet, he could also be irreverent. When questioned as to how he became a hero in World War II, he replied it was "involuntary--they sank my boat.".

This is Gracie’s new mommy, who has come to take this headstrong young pug on the adventure of a lifetime. Gracie moves to a new house, which is ruled with an iron paw by a no-nonsense feline named Aretha. Gracie is descended from wolves, and she knows enough about her ancestors to understand that not every critter gets to run the pack. Ey up, it's not only footie, pints and pies that are better up north - the humour also takes some beating. Whether it's comics like Peter Kay, Les Dawson and Victoria Wood, telly shows like Corrie and Open All Hours, or writers like Alan Bennett and Keith Waterhouse, the funniest and best-loved invariably hail from the land of perpetual drizzle (another thing they do better). This grand collection of northern wit is packed with these favourites and more. Likely lads and lippy lasses cast a wry eye on subjects close to the heart of every northerner, including - brass, grub, graft, courting, cricket, tittle-tattle and t'weather - adding up to a feast of northern hilarity.

Contents Introduction Ancient Acumen Medieval Monarchs and Renaissance Rulers Monarchy in a Muddle Quick-Witted Queens The Axeman Cometh… and Other Dying Words Monarchs Behaving Badly Modern Monarchs The House of Windsor The Prince of Gaffes The Rest on Royalty Until the 19th century, monarchy was the most common form of government throughout the world. Today, however, few nations have retained their monarchies and the majority of those that remain are constitutional. This means that the monarch exercises a mainly ceremonial role but has little or no political power. Only around 44 nations still have a royal head of state and of these, 16 are members of the same Commonwealth, headed by Queen Elizabeth II. The following collection includes kings and queens as well as emperors, empresses, sheikhs, emirs and sultans. They are all varieties of the same breed: a state ruler who comes to power by either conquest or inheritance. Definitions can be blurred and problematic. There is a democratically elected king, queens who rule empires and many other confusions. Some aristocrats have also been included as some were of royal lines and if events had gone differently, might themselves have worn the crown.
