Its 1919 and Henrich Danek Stendal is leaving his native Hungary behind. Having survived World War I, hes heading for America and New York City with his family in tow. His memories of the Great War resound in his mind, as does another deeply buried memory. There is no turning back. It is also 1979 in New York City and Daniel Henry Stone is a wild, young man who never backs away from a fight. Hes worked as a cook and a bartender most of his young life, but now hes landed a gem of a job as a renting agent in a large, thirty-two building complex. But thats just the tip of the iceberg. This building complex just might go co-op, and he could cash in on the deal of a lifetime. Their lives, although sixty years apart, will intersect in both action and thought, through the women they meet, the fortunes they seek, and the battles they wage. The mystery of their connection is both endearing and timeless.

As the details of HBO's Boardwalk Empire emerged, it quickly became the most anticipated programme in the network's history. The excitement was understandable - not only was the show created by Terence Winter, the man behind The Sopranos, but Martin Scorsese was one of the executive producers and would make a rare crossover to television by directing the pilot. Plus the cast was headed by the great Steve Buscemi and included some of the finest character actors in the business, whose previous work has included No Country for Old Men, This is England, and The Wire. Now that the prohibition epic has finally hit our screens, Boardwalk Empire has proven to be every bit as smart, brutal and thrilling as had been anticipated. Already renewed for a second season, it is set to become one of the defining series of the decades. This indispensible accompaniment to the show is brimming with fascinating details about the series, covering the historical background, how the 1920s was reconstructed, the realities of filming, biographies of key members of the cast and crew, and much, much more.

From Machiavellian city officials to big-time mobsters, corrupt beat cops, and overzealous G-men, Boardwalk Empire is replete with philosophically compelling characters who find themselves in philosophically interesting situations. This book is directed at thoughtful fans of the show. Here, readers discover parallels between the events in Boardwalk Empire and contemporary political events. Twenty philosophers address issues in political philosophy, ethics, aesthetics, feminism, and metaphysics. Is Nucky Thomson a Machiavellian prince or a Nietzschean superman? Is Jimmy's resentment towards Nucky justified, given that Jimmy would never have come into existence had his parents not met? What can be said about the ethics of lying in the seedy world of bootlegging? Agent Van Alden’s unique religious attitudes bring a warped sense of morality to the Boardwalk universe. One chapter brings to light the moral character of Van Alden’s God. Other chapters explores the roles that storytelling, deception, and gender play in the show.

Irvine Welsh's scintillating, disturbing, and altogether outrageous collection of stories—the basis for the 1998 cult movie directed by Paul McGuigan. He is called "the Scottish Celine of the 1990s" (Guardian) and "a mad, postmodern Roald Dahl" (Weekend Scotsman). Using a range of approaches from bitter realism to demented fantasy, Irvine Welsh is able to evoke the essential humanity, well hidden as it is, of his generally depraved, lazy, manipulative, and vicious characters. He specializes particularly in cosmic reversals—God turn a hapless footballer into a fly; an acid head and a newborn infant exchange consciousnesses with sardonically unexpected results—always displaying a corrosive wit and a telling accuracy of language and detail. Irvine Welsh is one hilariously dangerous writer who always creates a sensation.

Rural Ireland in the 1960s: if you were a boy, you listened to Luxembourg on the wireless, went to the pictures, went hurling up the fields with your best friend, thought about what the big boys got up to with the girls, and in particular what your brother did with his girlfriend, Minnie. Your mam ruled the house and you watched out for your father - the old lad - who was liable to fly into rages and give you a right ringer when you weren't expecting it. Most of all, you knew everything about the village where you lived, and everyone there. And Tony did; he was one smart boy, ready for anything - at least he thought he was until the day he saw his father with Mrs Rourke and was involved in an accident that changed everything. Dancing with Minnie the Twig is Tony's story. It is a haunting and very special novel as, on the day of his funeral, he watches his family, friends and the rest of the community arrive at the church and prepare for the service to mark the end of his short life. In terms of its rural setting and its focus on a small community that, even in Ireland, has long since ceased to exist, the book has real echoes of Dancing at Lughnasa. It's Irish in the best sense of the word; the characters step out of the pages to meet you, and although Tony is dead, his narrative voice blazes with life. Very funny in parts, the novel is overlaid with a melancholy for times past that lingers long after the final page has been turned.

The only problem is, it cannot be reversed. Once it starts, there is nothing anyone can do. Professional wrestler Al Snow delivers highlights from his onscreen antics and never-before-heard tales from the road in this high-flying memoir spanning 30 years in the ring In the late 90s, wrestling journeyman Al Snow looked in the mirror and saw a man who needed help. A man whose reputation within the wrestling industry was excellent but whose career was going nowhere. Channeling his frustration into the gimmick for which he would become best known, Al began talking to (and through) a mannequin head. With Extreme Championship Wrestling, Al reinvented himself as an unhinged neurotic and became one of the hottest acts in the most cutting-edge promotion in America when wrestlingÕs popularity was at its peak. This led to a journey back to the industryÕs main stage, World Wrestling Entertainment, during the wildly popular Attitude Era, and in the central role as a trainer and father figure on the MTV reality show, Tough Enough. Now, after 35 years in the industry, Al Snow tells the stories of the unbelievable yet true events that formed his career, from his in-ring recollections to out-of-ring escapades, including drunken midnight journeys with a vanfull of little people, overuse of Tasers at autograph signings, and continual attempts on his life by assorted members of the animal kingdom. Self Help is Al Snow at his best, delivering what everybody wants and needs.

""Except Education" describes what really happens inside of American public high schools. In these pages are the tales of the lawyers who advocate for students and threaten to sue any teacher who does not comply. There are also the lost autistic souls who are led from meeting to meeting by guilty parents; there are the young Americans who are chained by behavior contracts and doped up by prescription medicine and then ignored roundly by their parents. Fights, rapes, drugs, and stories of ordinary madness are countered by the frustration of educators stuck in terribly tedious, horribly political situations that sap their will to do one of the most noble things on the face of the earth: teach the young. After reading this book, parents will wonder what exactly is going on in their children s schools, and aspiring teachers may well think twice about their career choice.
