Every society has its own definition of a normal and an abnormal human condition. For persons living with mental disorders, these concepts have a tremendous impact. This study investigates how the abnormal mind is culturally defined in Malaŵi, South-Eastern Africa. Based on anthropological techniques such as interviews, participant observation, and archive research, it explores the different social dimensions of mental disorder - e.g. its reflection in traditional dance rituals, in behavioural rules during pregnancy, or in the healing ministry of independent churches. It demonstrates how local explanations of mental disorder - be it witchcraft, an angry ancestor, or the will of God - determine the social acceptance of an affected person's condition. Recent processes of cultural change, however, strengthen the pluralism of Malaŵian religious landscape, opening the local debate to an ever wider range of interpretations.

Most of us take our mental health for granted. But when confronted by mental illness in our family, our friends, or ourselves, even the most competent among us is likely to become bewildered. Understanding Troubled Minds provides a calm and authoritative guide to the full range of specific mental illnesses and available treatments. It deals with particular patterns of illness in women, children, and the elderly. It stresses the value of partnership among psychiatrists, patients, and their families. And it places this knowledge within the framework of modern psychiatry-from the history of the profession to just what it is that psychiatrists and fellow health-workers do, and how they can help. A sense of hope and optimism prevails within these pages. The authors, both eminent psychiatrists with long practical experience, stress that great strides are being made in the treatment of mental illness. But they also warn against the lure of the instant cure. Acknowledging the complexity of human nature, they weave the stories of real people and the insights of many writers throughout their text. Balanced, up-to-date, thoroughly readable, and humanistic, this book will both increase our practical knowledge and deepen our understanding of mental illness.

The "Troubles" in Northern Ireland have endured for so long that eventually the abnormal has become normal. This volume examines the processes by which society has become gradually dehumanised, and how the inhuman conditions, under which people have been forced to live so long, have come about. The authors seek to understand this situation and build upon the current literature, using their different personal and professional backgrounds to great effect to create a wider perspective. They describe the political background, the framework of Kleinian psychoanalysis, and then bring the two together to create a new foundation from which to move from a troubled mind to a mind at peace.

In Troubled Hearts, Troubled Minds: Making sense of the emotional dimension of learning, Peter Nelmes delivers key lessons on how we can better connect with both the head and the heart during the teaching and learning process. How are we to think of the disruptive or destructive child? Drawing on over 25 years of experience working with children with challenging behaviour, Peter Nelmes argues that such children are members of a community who are possibly the least understood and accepted in society – and whose problems are often met with condemnation rather than understanding and support. Through his insightful explanation of this phenomenon, Peter gives anyone who works with such children a framework for understanding how the heart and the mind relate to each other in practice. Writing with warmth and compassion, he shares a range of real-life case studies which illustrate how emotional difficulties can often diminish a child's capacity for learning and delivers key lessons on the importance of nurturing pupils’ self-regulation and providing them with supportive interventions. Troubled Hearts, Troubled Minds is divided into two parts: the first comprising lessons from practice and the second looking towards a coherent theory that can then inform practice. Part I begins by exploring the emotional background of teaching and learning, and the following three chapters enquire into the three components of shared meanings in the classroom: the teacher, the context and the learner. The final chapter in this section turns the focus onto what it means to attune to the emotional dimension of classroom interactions, putting greater emphasis on the lessons for practice. In Part II, Peter explores the best modes of talk to use when teaching troubled children and presents a way of conceptualising all that has been described in the book into a simple theoretical model which educators can relate to and apply in their own setting. If you have ever struggled to teach – or even just connect with – a troubled child, then this book is for you. Contents include: Part I: The construction and components of shared meanings: lessons from practice. Chapter 1. The emotional component of teaching and learning; Chapter 2. The teacher; Chapter 3. The context; Chapter 4. The learner; Chapter 5. Attuning to and containing emotions; Part II: What does this mean for teachers? Lessons for practice. Chapter 6. How to talk to troubled children; Chapter 7. Relf-regulation and supportive interventions.
