This original study examines women's activism against war in areas as far apart as Sierra Leone, India, Colombia and Palestine. It shows women on different sides of conflicts in the former Yugoslavia and Israel addressing racism and refusing enmity and describes international networks of women opposing US and Western European militarism and the so-called 'war on terror'. These movements, though diverse, are generating an antimilitarist feminism that challenges how war and militarism are understood, both in academic studies and the mainstream anti-war movement. Gender, particularly the form taken by masculinity in a violent sex/gender system, is inseparably linked to economic and ethno-national factors in the perpetuation of war.

Why does a particular landscape move us? What is it that attaches us to a particular place? Tall’s From Where We Stand is an eloquent exploration of the connections we have with places—and the loss to us if there are no such connections. A typically rootless child of several American suburbs, Tall set out to make a true home for herself in the landscape that circumstance had brought her—the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. In a mosaic of personal anecdotes, historical sketches, and lyrical meditations, she interweaves her own story with the story of this place and its people—from the Seneca Nation of the Iroquois, to European settlers, to the many utopians who sensed and were inspired by a spiritual resonance here. This edition includes an introduction by William Kittredge and a foreword by Stephen Kuusisto, both highlighting the book’s significance and Tall’s exquisite skill in tracing the relationship between homelands and storytelling.

"In [this book], noted scientist Seymour Garte proves that on the whole, human beings have worked harder to improve our environment than we can ever imagine. Using scientific evidence and a balanced, middle of the road approach, [he] explodes many of the popular myths about human health and the environment. He provides the facts to show that scientific research, environmental activism, and government regulation have produced steady progress in dealing with pollution, poor health, loss of natural resources, and other negative byproducts of our industrial society. With the compassion and aid of dedicated environmentalists, activists, and politicians, we have actually made incredible progress in areas like public health, AIDS research, poverty, and feeding the hungry."--Jacket.
