The Oxford Handbook of Qualitative Research, Second Edition presents a comprehensive, interdisciplinary overview of the field of qualitative research. Divided into eight parts, the forty chapters address key topics in the field such as approaches to qualitative research (philosophical perspectives), narrative inquiry, field research, and interview methods, text, arts-based, and internet methods, analysis and interpretation of findings, and representation and evaluation. The handbook is intended for students of all levels, faculty, and researchers across the disciplines, and the contributors represent some of the most influential and innovative researchers as well as emerging scholars. This handbook provides a broad introduction to the field of qualitative research to those with little to no background in the subject, while providing substantive contributions to the field that will be of interest to even the most experienced researchers. It serves as a user-friendly teaching tool suitable for a range of undergraduate or graduate courses, as well as individuals working on their thesis or other research projects. With a focus on methodological instruction, the incorporation of real-world examples and practical applications, and ample coverage of writing and representation, this volume offers everything readers need to undertake their own qualitative studies.

Few adults deliberately set out to cause children stress or to teach them how to deal with it, yet adults do just that with every word, action, and reaction. This book collects work in the field of human development on how adults can help children learn to cope with stress. Each of the 30 chapters previously appeared in "Young Children," the professional journal of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). The chapters are grouped into such topics as coping with expected challenges, strengthening contemporary families, making sure that adults do not contribute to children's stress, and a review of stress research. The chapter titles include: (1) "Lobster on the Sidewalk: Understanding and Helping Children with Fears" (Hyson); (2) "Living with He-Man: Managing Superhero Fantasy Play" (Kostelnik and others); (3) "Sex Education with Young Children" (Koblinsky and others); (4) "Preparing Young Children for Hospitalization" (Trawick-Smith and Thompson); (5) "The Young Child in the Hospital" (Fassler); (6) "Saying Goodbye to Preschool" (Ziegler); (7) "Helping Children Cope with Death" (Furman); (8) "Using Crisis-Oriented Books with Young Children" (Jalongo); (9) "The Teacher's Role in Facilitating a Child's Adjustment to Divorce" (Skeen and McKenry); (10) "Blended Families: Overcoming the Cinderella Myth" (Skeen and others); (11) "Child Abuse and Neglect: Prevention and Reporting" (Meddin and Rosen); (12) "There is More to Early Childhood Education than Cognitive Development" (Haiman); (13) "Obedience is Not Enough" (Kamii); (14) "'But What about Sharing?': Children's Literature and Moral Development" (Krogh and Lamme); (15) "The Unpopular Child" (Roopnarine and Honig); (16) "Black Children: Their Roots, Culture, and Learning Styles" (Hale-Benson); (17) "A Child's Right to the Valuing of Diversity" (Lane); and (18) "'It'll Be a Challenge!': Managing Emotional Stress in Teaching Disabled Children" (White and Phair). The city of Cork experienced a political odyssey between Easter 1916 and the end of 1918. Wartime policies conceived in London manifested themselves unexpectedly in Cork--The Defence of the Realm Act was used to repress political speech; deficit spending generated massive inflation; mandatory arbitration encouraged workers to join trade unions; food rationing panicked a country scarred by the Potato Famine; and military conscription generated virtual rebellion. As a result, the Cork public increasingly turned against the war. The book examines the political situation in Cork prior to the Easter Rising; local reactions to the rebellion; the rapid creation of the Republican mass movement; the dramatic decline of the Irish Party; the explosion of anti-authority street rioting; the mobilization of women in the independence struggle; disturbances against venereal disease treatments and visiting American sailors; the emergence of radical trade unionism; agitation over the retention of local food supplies; the nationalist mobilization during the Conscription Crisis; and Sinn Féin's triumph in the 1918 General Election.

Native Americans in Comic Books

This work takes an in-depth look at the world of comic books through the eyes of a Native American reader and offers frank commentary on the medium’s cultural representation of the Native American people. It addresses a range of portrayals, from the bloodthirsty barbarians and noble savages of dime novels, to formulaic secondary characters and sidekicks, and, occasionally, protagonists sans paternal white hero, examining how and why Native Americans have been consistently marginalized and misrepresented in comics. Chapters cover early representations of Native Americans in popular culture and newspaper comic strips, the Fenimore Cooper legacy, the “white” Indian, the shaman, revisionist portrayals, and Native American comics from small publishers, among other topics.

"Weinstein contends that because the creators of many famous superheroes, such as Superman, were Jewish, those superheroes were inspired by Jewish values and Jewish figures, such as the patriarchs (for example, Moses and David), the Golem, and Samson. This book argues that the Jewish creators of early comic books, as the children of immigrants, tried to escape the feeling of inferiority occasioned by their being a minority religion by creating superheroes who would fight for truth and justice. Up, Up and Oy Vey argues that the secret, dual lives of many superheroes mirrors the dual lives of their creators, privately Jewish, publicly American. The book contains a section of full-color excerpts from certain comic books"--
