From best-selling author and theologian R. T. Kendall... Will you continue to sit back and take sides? This book will help you unite the power of the Holy Spirit with the knowledge of God's Word, and anticipate a last-days revival because of this union. In October 1992 while pastoring Westminster Chapel in London, England, R. T. Kendall organized a conference around a series of sermons prophetically describing what God may have in store for His people in these last days. The series proclaimed an outpouring much deeper than anything we have ever experienced--an awakening not based on feelings or emotions but inspired through the irrevocable truth of God's Word, fulfilled through the conviction and direction of the Holy Spirit. In Word and Spirit best-selling author and theologian R. T. Kendall challenges your traditions, emotions, convictions, and maybe even your faith. Kendall shares his vision of the future--of a holy unity of the Word and the Spirit that leads to a last-days revival. There are those who live their spiritual lives by biblical explanation only. Meanwhile, others base their theological dispositions on "signs and wonders" characterized by the Pentecostal/Charismatic movement. In this exciting and controversial book R. T. revives his original messages, adding new insights into what they mean for us today and revealing everything we need to know about the coming move of God. The Spirituality of a quarter of all Christians can be characterized as "charismatic." Pentecostalism itself is one of the most rapidly growing religious movements in America and abroad. Despite these facts, little serious effort has been made to develop a systematic Pentecostal theology - until now. Word and Spirit at Play is the first work to outline a theology that does full justice to the Pentecostal experience of God's Word and Spirit. Dutch scholar Jean-Jacques Suurmond, who is himself a Pentecostal, draws on two decades of work in Pentecostalism to demonstrate in a simple yet scholarly way how a charismatic approach shapes the lives of Christians and the church. Suurmond describes the history and characteristics of present-day Pentecostalism, discusses the significance of Spirit baptism to the Pentecostal life, reflects seriously on the "gifts of grace," (including tongues), and celebrates the role of "play" in Pentecostal worship. This book will be invaluable both to theologians - who have long wanted a scholarly synthesis of charismatic theology - and to laypeople, especially Pentecostals wanting to deepen their faith and other believers searching for a spirituality that opens up new sources of Christian community. JEAN-JACQUES SUURMOND is a Reformed minister in Vlaardingen, the Netherlands.

Proven Formula for a Balanced, Effective Christian Life Too often churches emphasize the Bible without welcoming the work of the Holy Spirit, who inspired the Bible. Or they focus on seeking manifestations of the Spirit while neglecting sound Bible teaching. The result: a schism in their faith lives in which they cut God--and his power--out of Christianity's equation. How can God draw a lost world to his Son through people who are powerless? With over 170 years of diverse ministry experience among them, respected veteran leaders R. T. Kendall, Charles Carrin, and Jack Taylor restore balance to the Christian walk. They show that when the Word is faithfully preached and the Holy Spirit warmly welcomed, the Lord manifests his power, bringing salvation, miracles, healings, heart understanding, and much more. Only when Christians honor the Word and the Spirit can they lead empowered, fruitful lives.

Enjoying Christ as the Word and the Spirit through Prayer

"The Bible reveals that God is our enjoyment and that all the riches of God, what God is in His fullness, are the riches of Christ (Eph. 3:8, 19b). All the fullness of God is embodied in Christ (Col. 1:19) and becomes the items of the riches of Christ. The reality of Christ is the Spirit, who is the Spirit of reality (John 14:17), and all that Christ is, that is, all the riches of Christ, are revealed in the Word (1:1). Therefore, in order to know the riches of Christ, we have to know the Word, which is the revelation of all that Christ is. Moreover, the place in which we realize the Triune God is our human spirit (3:6). In order to realize Christ and always enjoy Him, we have to exercise our spirit. There is no other way to enjoy Him, and there is no other organ with which we can enjoy Him. We have to exercise our spirit to realize all that God is in Christ through the Holy Spirit and as revealed in the Word. These five items--God, Christ, the Holy Spirit, the Word, and our spirit--are the factors of our enjoyment of God." This book affords much guidance in how to enjoy Christ as the Word and the Spirit through prayer.

Evangelical Christianity in Australia

Evangelical Christianity is one of the most formative and least acknowledged movements in Australian history. This book restores evangelicals to their place as a dynamic element in the dialogue between Christianity and general Australian society.Evangelicalism focuses on the Gospel, the God-given means not only of the salvation of individual souls, but also of the renovation of society and culture. In this novel and well-sustained study, Stuart Piggin argues that evangelicalism is strongest when it synthesises Biblical orthodoxy withspiritual passion and human compassion. When this synthesis was achieved, it resulted in spiritual vitality and the strengthening of Australian nationhood.Piggin draws on a wealth of personal accounts and out-of-the-way sources to shed light on matters as disparate as the character of the Reverend Samuel Marsden, the 'sinless perfection' movement among students at the University of Sydney in the 1930s, the Billy Graham Crusades, and the Anglicandebate on the ordination of women.By analysing the experience and contribution of the evangelical movement, this book challenges readers to rethink their national history.
