Tu Na Si Ba - The "Secret" Breathing Methods of Xing Yi Quan. Chinese-English Edition with link to online video of Tu Na Si Ba performed by Master Song Zhi Yong. In Northern China and in Shanxi Province, the purported birthplace of Xing Yi Quan, Master Li Gui Chang is a legendary figure in the world of martial arts. Few practitioners have approached Master Li's achievements in Tai Ji Quan and Xing Yi Quan. Li studied Xing Yi Quan and Ba Gua Zhang with the great Dong Xiu Sheng and Tai Ji Quan with Liu Dong Han. Li Gui Chang's expression of Xing Yi Quan is sometimes referred to as the Xing Yi "Body Method," because of its emphasis on subtle internal body actions and internally sensing Qi and Jin. Hence, it is completely congruent with Daoist Yang Sheng (nourishing life) practices. In this unique book, Song Zhi Yong, a senior disciple of Li Gui Chang, reveals the formerly "secret" foundational training which is the key to Master Li's Xing Yi Quan: Tu Na Si Ba (Four Essential Breathing Forms) San Ti Shi (Three Body Posture Training). Tu Na Si Ba was traditionally only taught to senior disciples, and has never before been written about in English or Chinese. Tu Na literally means "spit out" (Tu) and "receive" or "accept" (Na). In both martial and Daoist practices, Tu Na refers to breathing exercises associated with self-cultivation. When practicing the gentle, slow movements of Tu Na Si Ba, one effectively "breathes out the old and takes in the new" (Tu Gu Na Xing). This combination of inner-directed movement and breathing builds up Qi in the body, while simultaneously strengthening the tendons and bones. Every aspect of Tu Na Si Ba directly connects to the spirit, internal mechanics and martial techniques of Xing Yi Quan. The practice of Tu Na Si Ba is particularly critical to understanding and developing skill in San Ti Shi and Pi Quan (Splitting Fist), the core practices of Xing Yi Quan. The final section of this book presents San Ti Shi, the fixed standing (Zhan Zhu

Chinese Medical Chinese is a highly useful work for the student or practitioner of Chinese Medicine who is acquiring the original medical language of their profession. Just as a medical student of Western medicine needs to have a grasp of Latin, it is important that the TCM student has a basic understanding of Chinese. To help with this, Chinese Medical Chinese provides invaluable information to help the student understand how the language fits in to the overall theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine and acupuncture. This title assumes that the student has already acquired a knowledge of how Chinese characters are composed, how they are written by hand and how they are pronounced. In early China, was it correct for a woman to disobey her father, contradict her husband, or shape the public policy of a son who ruled over a dynasty or state? According to the Lienü zhuan, or Categorized Biographies of Women, it was not only appropriate but necessary for women to step in with wise counsel when fathers, husbands, or rulers strayed from the path of virtue. Compiled toward the end of the Former Han dynasty (202 BCE-9 CE) by Liu Xiang (79-8 BCE), the Lienü zhuan is the earliest extant book in the Chinese tradition solely devoted to the education of women. Far from providing a unified vision of women's roles, the text promotes a diverse and sometimes contradictory range of practices. At one extreme are exemplars resorting to suicide and self-mutilation as a means to preserve chastity and ritual orthodoxy. At the other are bold and outspoken women whose rhetorical mastery helps correct erring rulers, sons, and husbands. The text provides a fascinating overview of the representation of women's roles in early legends, formal speeches on statecraft, and highly fictionalized historical accounts during this foundational period of Chinese history. Over time, the biographies of women became a regular feature of dynastic and local histories and a vehicle for expressing and transmitting concerns about women's social, political, and domestic roles. The Lienü zhuan is also rich in information about the daily life, rituals, and domestic concerns of early China. Inspired by its accounts, artists across the millennia have depicted its stories on screens, paintings, lacquer ware, murals, and stone relief sculpture, extending its reach to literate and illiterate audiences alike.
