Yoga therapy is commonly used for the management of arthritis, but often focusses exclusively on adaptation of the physical poses and on structural solutions. This book moves beyond the traditional routines to present yoga as a lifestyle designed to improve quality of life and overall well-being for individuals living with arthritis and rheumatic conditions. By incorporating the ancient practices of yoga as both physical and mental exercises involving a model of 5-koshas or sheaths (physical, energetic, mental/emotional, wisdom, and spiritual), the yoga therapy practice presented here will help reduce pain and shift the perspective of the individual living with arthritis. This therapy uses a whole-person approach that employs a broad range of tools to address the biopsychosocial effects of arthritis through the application of yoga practices and philosophy. Useful as a guide for people living with arthritis, this book is full of inspiration for self care along with instructions for yoga teachers and medical professionals to guide their clients using this whole-person perspective.

Excessive contact and friction of two adjacent joint surfaces may intensify arthritis. One of the reasons may be the presence of calcium crystals in some patients, these diamonds cutting into the joint surface. Yoga separates these two surfaces. On the other hand, an apparent paradox appears: poor contact and friction don’t stimulate the cartilage, and it is not recovered and renewed. The substantial shift of the surfaces pressing against each as a consequence of improper biomechanics also destroys the cartilage. In this case, yoga makes a perfect way out as it stimulates the joint surfaces to restore and prevents excessive shifts, ruptures and the appearance of destructive forces at the same time. Moreover, we know that the joint has small connecting components not involved in full volume. This means that the surfaces sliding forward and backward relative to one another, start, in fact, knitting. In the worst cases, the joint becomes immovable. Yoga removes such bone unions gradually. Yoga poses, or asanas, recover the knee joint flexibility, strengthen muscles and ligaments which surround it. Due to yoga, your knees will become stronger and healthier, will be able to resist heavy loads and will be less subject to damages. Nevertheless, in the course of yoga practice, anyone can also injure his/her knees. Although yoga for knees is applied very successfully, the knees may get hurt at the wrong method. How? This may be a foolish attempt to master some yoga pose, for example, the Lotus Pose, for which you must first develop excellent flexibility and strength of your knee joints. Moreover, a person may damage the knees during yoga classes while applying too much effort, exerts himself/herself too much to achieve perfection in the asana. In other words, one should practice yoga regularly, and master the yoga poses gradually, moving from simple to complex ones. Would You Like To Know More? Arthritis is the swelling and tenderness of one or more of your joints. The main symptoms of arthritis are joint pain and stiffness, which typically worsen with age. The most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis causes cartilage -- the hard, slippery tissue that covers the ends of bones where they form a joint -- to break down. Rheumatoid arthritis is a disease in which the immune system attacks the joints, beginning with the lining of joints Uric acid crystals, which form when there's too much uric acid in your blood, can cause gout. Infections or underlying diseases, such as psoriasis or lupus, can cause other types of arthritis. Treatments vary depending on the type of arthritis. The main goals of arthritis treatments are to reduce symptoms and improve quality of life. The second edition of the popular yoga therapy book designed for those living with all forms of arthritis.

With the help of this book, any person suffering from any of these conditions and others can benefit, correct or cure the disorder leading to better health.Since yoga as a science is not widely known as yet in the world, very few medical professionals are knowledgeable of it or its therapeutic application. Much of what is known has been distorted by religious, cultic and mystical viewpoints. Its scientific character only began being restored in the 1960's. This work comes out of the history, principles, philosophy and practices of Yoga Science. Every topic covered in this book is based on decades of experience in treating chronic health problems and conducting research in some dominant health issues of our time. These findings, therefore, are genuinely claimed and presented in this book. Please read them, apply them, and help others.

Mukunda Stiles begins by providing a comprehensive overview of the spiritual philosophy of yoga, and its many branches. He discusses everything that a beginning student needs to consider when choosing a practice, including how to find a yoga teacher. He also shares his solid understanding of anatomy and kinesiology (how specific muscles and bones react during movement) so that you can understand how each asana affects your body. Structural Yoga Therapy "TM" involves a series of 24 asanas. You'll learn "body-reading" to determine what your posture reveals about muscular imbalances. You'll find out about joint mobility and muscle strength and learn how to work with a series of joint-freeing exercises to strengthen muscles. This book is a training manual and a resource for nurses, physical therapists, doctors, yoga therapists and yoga teachers who are looking for ways to utilize yoga as a therapeutic modality to help older people and patients suffering from a range of ailments relating to muscles, bones, joints and nerves. This work is called medical yoga therapy: the targeted use of yoga, not merely for general wellbeing but as a complementary form of treatment for specific, diagnosed medical conditions. Medical yoga therapy is not an alternative to western medicine (though it can sometimes eliminate or postpone the need for surgery or drugs): rather, it is a complement. Done correctly, it can relieve pain, increase mobility, improve balance, strengthen muscles, support bone health, and decrease the chance of falls and other injuries which, in older people or patients, can be life-threatening or debilitating. In this book the author introduces readers to thirteen specific medical conditions having to do with bones, joints, muscles, and nerves. And for each condition she offers a selection of appropriate poses, complete with photographs and detailed instructions, including specific hints for working with patients whose strength and range of motion may be quite limited. She has organized each section into three series of poses, seated, stand and floor. These poses have been adapted from traditional hatha yoga postures. They have been designed to relieve pain, improve health, promote acceptance of life, and encourage a peaceful state of mind. All have been carefully chosen and refined through years of clinical practice.
